Alex Balles

Alex Anthony Balles, 75, of Filer passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born March 20, 1938 in Gardner, Colorado to Julian Balles and Rose Padilla. He was raised and attended school there until moving to Idaho in 1952 at the age of 13. He lived with family and helped them on the farm until joining the military in 1955. He served in the Army as a member of the 101st airborne until returning back to Idaho where he worked various jobs in agriculture and for the Bean Growers Association. In December of 1960 he met and married Valdi Mitchell.
In 1966, after much work and sacrifice, he was able to bring his whole family from Colorado to live with him in Filer. In 1977 he began working as a trucker and continued driving truck for 33 years until his retirement in 2010.
Alex will always be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He loved to hunt, fish, and camp and always enjoyed the outdoors. He had a nickname for everybody and always referred to them that way. More than anything, he loved his family and especially spending time with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.
Alex was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Valdi, two brothers, two sisters, a son, a son-in-law, a grandson, and a great-granddaughter.
He is survived by eleven siblings, his children Kathie (Tom) Fisher, Marilyn (Larry) Fisher, Brenda (Stacey) Blood, Travis Alexander (Lori) Balles, Brandie (Waylon) Greco, and Amber (Bryan Exon) Balles, as well as 12 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his lifelong friend Alex Brito, and his best friend and brother-in-law Troy Mitchell.
A funeral service will be held Friday, March 29, 2013 at 2:00pm at the Filer Baptist Church with burial to follow at the Filer Cemetery. A visitation will be held Thursday, March 28, 2013 from 6-8pm at White Mortuary "Chapel by the Park". Services will be officiated by Pastor Scotty Brown and under the direction of funeral director Lance Cox
