Alvin was born to Alfred and Pearl Griffin in Taloga Oklahoma. He was the 5th of 13 children. During the dust bowl era, when Alvin was 8 years old, the family moved to Arock, Oregon. While in high school Alvin moved to Ontario, Oregon to help Fred and Sophia Butler on their farm. Alvin went on to graduate from Ontario High School and shortly thereafter, he met the love of his life and married Ruth Peterson December 29, 1950. Alvin enlisted in the army and Ruth stayed behind to finish her senior year of high school. After basic training, Ruth joined Alvin in San Francisco where he was stationed for two years. Their first son Leon was born while they were living in California. He was discharged in 1953 and after turning down an offer to become a rookie cop, he followed his dreams and moved to Ontario to live the life of a farmer. Alvin and Ruth bought a farm from Vera Staples on the Hyline area of the Oregon Slope. They lived in their first home which was a 16'X24' shack with no indoor plumbing until they purchased the Leonard Grimes place across the road in 1959. In 1957 their second son Mark was born. They raised hay, grain and alfalfa seed and ran a small dairy for a number of years. In 1996 Alvin and Ruth sold the farm and bought a small acreage on Boatlanding Road.
Alvin and Ruth were very active in the Hyline Community. They had weekly pinochle parties, fish fries and 4th of July picnics, plus many activities at the Hyline Community Hall.
Alvin loved old cars and tractors and restored a number of both antique cars and tractors. He was best known for his cherry red and black Model A. Alvin and Ruth were members of the Crankers Car Club. One of the favorite memories of the grand kids was rides in the old cars in local parades.
The Griffin place was always bustling with grand grandkids (7 in all) and visits with friends from near and far. Often a spontaneous card game would take place. There was a dirt patch and plenty of motorcycles and go carts for the grandkids to ride on and in the winter, snowmobiles ran the track. Alvin and Ruth loved having grandkids over and always had a pantry full of cookies and treats. Alvin was always willing to give a helping hand to a friend.
Alvin was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ruth on June 3, 2013. He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Leon & Laura Griffin and Mark & Tammi Griffin. They have 7 grandchildren; Kevin (Adele) Griffin, Jaimie (Sam) Widmer, Jill (Brandon) Thomas, Scott Griffin, Andrew (Kelsey) Griffin, Aaron Griffin, and Amanda Griffin, plus 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters Viola, Erma, Jean, Leona, Neva and Margaret. He is survived his brothers Floyd, Harold, Gerry, Lyndel, Roger and David, plus one remaining sister Eunice.
Our family is grateful for the support given by Heart & Home Hospice during Alvin's final days. Special thanks to the very caring staff at Brookdale (formerly Meadowbrook) and to volunteers of Veterans Advocates.
