Art lived his life as the utmost servant leader.
Art was born to Eugene and Josephine (Boshouwers) Campo on April 27, 1916 in New Plymouth where he attended school until the age of 14 when he left school to help his mother operate the family farm following his father's passing in 1925 when Art was 9 years of age. Art continued operating the family farm for seven years before going to work in construction. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in New Plymouth and Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Fruitland where he was an active member and supporter of the church.
Art met the love of his life, Agnes Mary Henggeler Campo, in 1934 and they were married on September 7, 1942 while Art was home on leave from the US Army. Their joyous union produced four children, Anona Shupe, Bernard (Carolyn) Campo, Robert (Susan) Campo and Dennis (Carla) Campo. Art was grandfather to Christine Clark and Dana Beckwith; Bernard Carl and Brandon Campo; Jonathon and Jennifer Campo; Carly Campo Fleege and Carlene Campo, as well as, great grandfather to Casey and Jesse Beckwith and great great grandfather to Hendricks Edwards. In addition, Art is survived by his brother Joe Campo and sister Louise Palumbo, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Art was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Agnes Mary (Henggeler) Campo and two sisters Teresa Fiellen and Margaret Henggeler.
Art enlisted in the US Army in March 1942, where he participated in the activation of the 413th AAA Gun Battalion following basic training and remained with the unit through the end of World War II. Art's service with the 413th AAA Gun Battalion, Battery A included the Normandy D-Day invasion, operations through northern France, the Battle of the Bulge, defense of the Ludendorf Bridge (Remagen) and the Rhineland. Art received two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained on D-Day and later during operations in northern France. He also received the Bronze Arrowhead for his part in the D-Day landing and five Bronze Stars for his part in five major engagements in the European Theater. Art was Honorably Discharged from the Army in August 1945 with the rank of First Sergeant
Following World War II, Art returned to Fruitland, where he bought the Utoco service station in 1946 with money his wife, Agnes, had saved from his Army allotments. In July 1949, the service station was burned to the ground and subsequently rebuilt at it present location. In September 1949, Art bought the Utoco distributorship that has grown into the present day Campo Oil Company and Campo-Poole Distributing LLC.
Art was instrumental in the formation of the Fruitland Fire Department after seeing the need first hand when his station burned. Art purchased a surplus Navy truck to start the department, served as Fire Chief for 30 years and helped organize the current day mutual aid agreement. Art was an active member in the Fruitland community having served on the Chamber of Commerce, Fruitland Planning and Zoning Commission and other community organizations.
