She was born on Oct. 29, 1929, the second daughter of Charles and Ferby Rock in Yakima, WA. Her father was an assistant J.C. Penney store manager in that city. In 1931, he was transferred to Marinette, WI, to be the manager of the Penney store. Betty attended Marinette schools from first grade through her junior year in high school. The family moved to Weiser, ID in 1946 and she attended Weiser High School her senior year. She did not know at the time, but she dated the fellow who was to become her future husband. After graduation, he joined the Army and Betty went to Maryville College in Maryville, TN for two years. She transferred to the University of Oregon School of Nursing in Portland, OR, graduating in 1953. Betty and the boy she dated her senior year in high school had gotten together again. Two weeks after graduating from nursing school, Betty and Bob Shannon were married in Ontario, OR. In 1955, their daughter Kathleen was born. In 1957, their second daughter, Karen, joined the family. For 28 years, Betty and Bob lived on Washoe Bench between Payette and Fruitland where they started out growing fruit and later raising cattle. They were very pleased to have Shannon Rd named after the family. They later moved to Fruitland. Betty worked as a Registered Nurse at the Nyssa Hospital for a short time and then went to work for Dr. Emmett at the Ontario Clinic. Later she worked for Dr. Lester Scott and Dr. Joseph Burdic at the Ontario Clinic. After Dr. Burdic left to specialize in psychiatry, Betty worked exclusively for Dr. Scott as his office nurse from 1962 to 1991. Dr. Scott retired in 1991 and Betty went to work for Dr. John Sigurdson as the nurse in charge at the Ontario Breast Cancer Detection Center in Ontario. She retired from the OBCDC in March 2001. Music was a passion for Betty. She sang with the TVCC Community Chorale from 1992-1998; during this time they sang at Carnegie Hall and the Salt Lake City Tabernacle. They sang with the Boise Philharmonic and traveled to Vancouver B.C. and Honolulu to sing with their Symphonies. Betty and Bob enjoyed traveling in the U.S., Canada and abroad. For their 50th wedding anniversary, they went to Australia and New Zealand. She was preceded in death by her parents, two grandsons, one great granddaughter, and a sister. Betty is survived by her husband Robert "Bob" of almost 60 years; her two daughters Kathy Walker (Mike) of Albany, OR and Karen McBee (Chuck) of Liberty Township, OH; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one sister.
