Charles Carrol Owen

February 23, 1928 — May 23, 2016

Charles Carrol Owen passed away May 23, 2016, in Idaho Falls. He was born in Idaho Falls on Feb. 23, 1928, to Blanche (Beam) Owen and Robert L. Owen, the third in a family of six children, five boys and one girl. He attended Idaho Falls High School, where he played the bass horn in the school band. He left high school to work in the post office as there was a shortage in workers due to World War II. At a young age, he joined the U.S. Marines and served aboard the S.S. Valley Forge. On returning home, he married Norma Mitchell. They had six children. Charles Carrol Owen served many years in the post office, eventually reaching the position of supervisor for the Western Region, a job that took him to Washington, D.C., Seattle, San Francisco and many other cities. His beloved wife joined him on many of these trips. He was a volunteer docent for the traveling exhibits at the Museum of Idaho, a member of Civitans, was an ombudsman who worked to improve conditions for those in nursing homes, worked for many years as a volunteer for the Red Cross and was an avid golfer. He was also a devoted grandfather and great-grandfather who dedicated many years to helping with their upbringing. His long service and cheerful nature were an asset to the community and will surely be missed. He will be deeply missed by his brothers and sister: Dwayne T. Owen, Shirley (Owen) Sheppard and Bruce Owen (Jo); his children: Michael Owen (Sarah), Craig Owen (Laurie) and Becky Owen Coffman (Gary); and eight grandchildren: Scott Owen, Elisa (Owen) Sheppard, Alena (Owen) Williamson, Christopher Owen, Shannon (McInelly) Wellman, Camber Coffman, Ana Kennedy Owen and Flora Kennedy Owen; as well as his nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; three of his children: Steve Owen, Denis Owen and Cathy Ransdell; two brothers: Robert L. Owen and Virgil R. Owen; and two grandsons: Christopher Owen and Eric McInelly.
