Daphne Marie Washburn

April 20, 1921 — July 6, 2013

Daphne (Pratt) Washburn, loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 6, 2013. Daphne was born to Everett and Gratia Pratt on April 20, 1921 in her family's ranch house outside of Enterprise, Oregon. Daphne graduated from Enterprise High School in 1939. After high school, she attended Eastern Oregon College in La Grande, Oregon where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught in Umapine, Oregon her first year, and then took a teaching position in the Vale School District. By the end of the war, Daphne was teaching high school science and women's physical education at Vale Union High School, as well as overseeing their Girls' Clubs. While attending a dance with other teachers and friends, Ruth, one of the friends with her that night, introduced Daphne to her brother, Armin Washburn. According to Armin's story, Daphne chased him so relentlessly that "he was finally caught" and married her in Enterprise on October 12, 1947. After marriage and six children, Daphne went back to college in the early 70's and received her Bachelors of Arts in Education and her teaching certificate from Boise State University. Daphne was a tireless volunteer up until her body could no longer keep up. She has been active in the Payette United Methodist Church for 51 years, serving in many different positions. Daphne volunteered many years as a Girl Scout Leader and as the Girl Scout's Purple Sage Council Chairman, as well as serving as a 4-H Leader for 25 years. She was a long standing member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary (John Webster Rhoads #33) and the Rebekah Lodge (Harmony #22) where she served in almost all positions and posts, as well as contributing much of her time to community service through these organizations. Daphne was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Armin A. Washburn. She is survived by her six children: Gratia Washburn Hasness (Spokane, WA); Verlinda Washburn (Spokane, WA); Anita Washburn Butler and husband, Bill (Juntura, OR); Myrna Washburn Rogers and husband Jeff (Williston, ND); Arminta Washburn Jensen and husband Glenn (San Juan Bautista, CA); and Alan Washburn and wife Jana (Rathdrum, ID), as well as her brother, Delbert Pratt. Daphne is also survived by her 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at the Payette First United Methodist Church, 502 N 11th St, Payette, ID 83661.
