Dr. Dauchy Migel, a local surgeon passed away Tuesday, Dec. 11th at Fairwinds Retirement Home in Idaho Falls, Idaho at the age of 99.
He was born on Nov. 5, 1913 in Brooklyn, New York to Julius A. and Margaret Dauchy Migel. At age 3 he moved with his family to Pelham, New York. He attended public school until age fourteen when he was enrolled in Hotchkiss Prep School. He next attended Colgate College for three years then was accepted at Harvard Medical School when he graduated in 1938. After six months abroad he spent a year and a half in an internship in Springfield, Massachusetts, followed by a three year residency in surgery. Following his formal training there, he was inducted into the Army at Fort Dixon, New Jersey and served from 1943 to 1946.
He served in New Guinea, Mindanao, and Leyte, as part of the 60th General Hospital before being discharged with the rank of Major.
After the war Dauchy chose to return to the western states where he set up his practice in Idaho Falls as the first specialist in that town, an abdominal surgeon.
He practiced medicine in Idaho Falls until 1989 at his office at 544 4th Street, and at the two hospitals, The Sacred Heart Hospital, and the LDS Hospital. During this time he also visited the surrounding areas and helped doctors in Arco, Driggs and Salmon, Idaho. He was known as a skilled surgeon with a compassionate bedside manner.
Dauchy also enjoyed life. He was an avid fly fisherman, tying his own flies and building his own fishing rods. He loved to fish the North Fork and South Fork of the Snake River in an inflatable rubber raft. He also enjoyed chess, tennis, hunting ducks and pheasants and sailing. He spent time with his family skiing, fishing, camping and traveling.
Soon after arriving in Idaho Falls he met Frances Poitevin. They were married on August 24th, 1949. Franny was a perfect complement to Dauchy and supported him in all of his pursuits. Together they had a home built on Park Road, and raised four children there.
Survivors include his wife Frances Migel of Idaho Falls; a daughter, Ada (Steve) Ritchie of Idaho Falls; three sons, Tom (Vione) Migel of Rexburg, Jim (Carol) Migel of Idaho Falls, and Mackey (Nek'ka) of Boise; a sister, Kathrine Aycrigg of ?; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Hamilton and Robert, and a sister Margaret Goss.
A memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 22, 2012, at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th Street in Idaho Falls. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service on Saturday. The family suggest donation be given to the Nature Conservancy, 151 N Ridge Ave, Ste 110, Idaho Falls, ID 83402.
