He lived most of his childhood in Gothenburg, NE where he graduated in May of 1948. His first job was when he was only 11 years old. He worked with an auctioneer who took him under his wing and offered him the opportunity to go to auctioneering school. Don regretted that he didn't pursue the opportunity. He worked there until high school. Don went to work for his father in a hay dehydrator plant and quit after 2 weeks to join the Navy. Don did his 12 week training in San Diego, CA and was later transferred to Norfolk ,VA. He served on the USS Cadmus as a metal smith. Don worked as a welder on all parts of the ship including welding underwater. Don married Wilma Adams in Fruitland, ID in May of 1950 and spent the first years of their marriage together in Norfolk, VA while Don continued to serve. In 1951 they had their first son Gary and in 1952 they returned to Fruitland where Wilma's parents lived. Don began his career in the grocery business in the old Center Market in Ontario, OR where he learned to cut meat. Don and Wilma also spent a brief time in Denver, CO where Don worked on a construction crew building 2 homes a day. They later returned to Idaho and Don went to work as a meat cutter in Weiser. Don and Wilma had their second son Terry in 1954. Don worked for Albertsons in Ontario, OR and at the Groceteria in New Plymouth, ID. In 1960 they had their third son Darren. Don and Wilma later opened Turner Grocery which was located on Main Street in Fruitland, ID. Many memories were created during this time. Don retired from Frito-Lay and later went to work at Walmart, greeting everyone with his big smile and a warm hug. Don loved his family and raised his children with Wilma in their family home on Hwy 30 in Fruitland, ID. Don spent time with his boys fishing on the Snake River, raising animals for FFA projects, sledding at the Church hill, building race cars and kart racing. He, along with his family, was actively involved in the Church of the Brethren for many years. Don and Wilma lost their youngest son Darren in a motorcycle accident in August of 1980. In the years that followed, Don and Wilma purchased a Model A Ford and joined a car club traveling with the club as far away as Lake Geneva, WI. They enjoy 15 years of fun in that model A Ford! Don also loved doing projects, working in his wood shop, taking painting classes and doing crafts with Wilma, along with spending time with his friends and family. Don's beloved wife of 55 years passed away in November, 2005. Don and DeAnn Braun were married in October, 2007. They enjoyed traveling together to Myrtle Beach, SC and later a long northern US road trip to visit family and friends. Don and DeAnn loved to spend time dancing the night away at Senior Dance Nights throughout the Treasure Valley, and making many new friends along the way. Don could always be found by DeAnn's side cheering for the grandkids at their many sporting events and enjoying family get-togethers. Don always had a project around the house or in the yard. In fact, just days before his passing he was out repairing a pump and planting his spring garden. Don's last 6 years were spent making memories with DeAnn, laughing together, loving and sharing. As DeAnn will say, "together is a wonderful place to be"! Don Turner was preceded in death by his parents and brother, loving wife Wilma and his beloved son Darren. Sharing in the memories of his life are; his wife DeAnn, his children Gary and his wife Fran, Terry and his wife Yvonne, LaVelle and his wife Rhonda, Machelle and her husband Tony, along with 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
