Devoted wife, mother, and friend, Doris Elizabeth Holm passed away peacefully with family by her side on March 27, 2012 in Idaho Falls. Her husband of 22 years, Harold Holm, preceded her in death only a few weeks before. They were constant companions. Doris was born in Canfield, Idaho, on the Dumac Plains, on November 17, 1922. The youngest of five children born to Agnes and Clarence Morgan, they were poor farmers of a 100-acre farm. Doris' fondest memory as a child was playing with her older brothers John and Billy and playing with her only toy, a doll. The family moved to Clarkston, Washington, when Doris was in the 8th grade. Although she was encouraged by her teacher to get an education and become a teacher herself, Doris was not allowed to finish high school and required to get a job to pay family bills. Displaying the characteristic strength she would be known for all her life, Doris completed high school on her own. She married Willis Berry in 1940 and had two children, Merrie and Timothy. Merrie died tragically of pneumonia at 2 ½ years of age, a great sadness in Doris' life. She divorced Willis and, along with her mother, raised Tim in Clarkston. Doris could do anything she set her mind to. She completed a secretarial degree at night, raised her son as a single mom, and joined the Lewiston, Idaho police force, first as a police matron and then as secretary to the Chief of Police, Robert O. Flood. A romance ensued and, after a four-year courtship, Doris and Bob joyously married on April 8, 1953 in McCall. They lived briefly in Lewiston with Tim, as well as Bob's son Larry from a previous marriage, until 1954 when Larry joined the Army and Bob landed a job with the Atomic Energy Commission in Idaho Falls directing security at the National Reactor Testing Station. Doris worked at the Bureau of Land Management. Another joyous event occurred in Bob and Doris' lives when Doris gave birth to their beloved daughter Lisa in 1959. Mother and daughter developed a special bond. Doris left her job with the BLM, saw Tim off to college, and raised Lisa. Doris and Bob were active, devoted members of the Order of the Eastern Star. Doris served as Worthy Matron of Henrietta Chapter #21 in 1976 (later serving Liberty Chapter #51 in 1993 and again in Henrietta in 2000). Whether enjoying a fun night of bridge, serving in the PTA, or participating in Eastern Star activities at state and local levels, Doris was a friend to many and the consummate hostess, which complimented her extraordinary talent in the kitchen. She deeply cherished the many friendships she made, especially through her involvement in Eastern Star. Always beautiful, Doris fooled everyone who consistently guessed her age at 10-15 years younger than she actually was! One of Bob's favorite stories was when someone asked him about his beautiful daughter!
Bob passed away in 1987 of complications from emphysema and leukemia. And yet after the sadness passed, another joy awaited Doris when she married Bob's close friend Harold Holm. They never left each other's side, continuing the enjoyment of Eastern Star activities together. Not a day passed between them when you couldn't hear an "I love you so much, honey" or spot Doris sitting on Harold's always available knee. Doris loved her extended family and was particularly devoted to Harold's son Richard Holm and his wife Sunnie who live locally. Doris and Harold lived for several years on Linden Place in Idaho Falls. The two of them made home improvements and Mom was constantly gardening (she loved to play in the dirt), tending house plants ("a house isn't a home without a few houseplants"), and welcoming folks into their home. After both suffered some physical ailments, they moved to Fairwinds and later to Bonaventure, where Doris especially enjoyed playing Bingo. Harold passed away on February 28 this year, a tremendous grief to Doris. Two days before Harold's service, she fell and broke her hip. She was unable to recover. Lisa held Doris' hand as she left this life, with granddaughters by her side saying their goodbyes. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers and her daughter, Merrie. She is survived by her son Tim Flood (Sandy) of Foster City, CA; her daughter Lisa Brett of Idaho Falls; grandsons Maclean Flood (Jessica) of Boise and Jacob Flood of San Francisco, CA; granddaughters Jaime Green (Aaron), Tara Moran (Justin) of Idaho Falls and Hannah Uebelhack of Nashville, TN; and great grandchildren Natasha, Alex, Morgan and Jaaron. How she loved her family and how they loved her back! Doris lived a beautiful life showing us how to be a family and to love each other. We will miss her. The family wishes to express thanks to the caring staff at Bonaventure and to Hospice of Eastern Idaho. Their support is greatly appreciated. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital, www.shrinershq.org or a charity of your choice. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2012, at the First Presbyterian Church, 325 Elm Street in Idaho Falls with Reverend Dr. Dennis Falasco, officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
