Dorothy Elsa Schoenhuth

November 29, 1921 — February 5, 2013

Dorothy was born November 29, 1921, in Emmett, Idaho, to Nathaniel Emanuel Schoenhuth and Elsa Magadelene Antonette Itrich. She moved to Idaho Falls in 1923 and attended school in Idaho Falls, graduating from high school in 1940. After high school Dorothy attended nursing school at Columbus Hospital in Great Falls, Montana. Dorothy graduated from nursing school in 1944, joined the Women's Army Corp, and was stationed in Modesto, California. She was sent to Europe at the end of 1944 and served in Germany. During Dorothy's time in Germany she was a nurse caring for some of the prisoner's awaiting trial at Nuremberg, Germany. Upon returning to America, Dorothy enrolled at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, Washington, and completed her training as a nurse-anesthetist. She worked as a nurse-anesthetist at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Idaho Falls, in Anchorage, Alaska, Coalinga, California, and with Care Medico in the jungles of Kula Lipis, Malaysia. Upon returning from Malaysia, Dorothy worked in San Diego, Coalinga, and other locations in California. When Dorothy retired she lived with and cared for her sister, Esther, in Modesto, California, and after her sister's passing she moved back to Idaho Falls in 1999. Dorothy liked to say she was a "service organization." She cared for her ailing mother and sister when they needed her help and many other family members. Dorothy was active in her retirement years by traveling. She went to Alaska by car when in her 80's, traveled around Southeast Idaho and always enjoyed Island Park and Jackson. Many of these trips were taken with friends and her extended family. She loved to visit Disneyland with great-nieces and nephews. She enjoyed her time at Fairwinds and the many outings that she was able to go on with the "inmates" at Fairwinds. Dorothy never married, but is survived by many great-nieces and nephews, including Leslye Schoenhuth, Albert Schoenhuth, Spring Schoenhuth, Greg (Terry) Anderson, Neil (Terry) Anderson, Robert Anderson, Bart Anderson, Bruce (Nancy) Bradley, Cheryl (Craig) Cutler, Kathey (Robert) Fulks, Russ (Pam) Bradley, Lori (Reo) Castleton, and Dennis Anderson,. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Louise (Joe) Platter, Marvel (Bill) Anderson, Esther (Clark) Smith, Albert (Dorothea) Schoenhuth, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 237 N. Water in Idaho Falls. A viewing will be held on Saturday at the church from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Idaho Falls, with Military Rites under the direction of the Bonneville Veterans Team.
