Eunice Helen Halkar, 89, of Idaho Falls, died Friday, July 29, 2011, at her home at Bonaventure Assisted Living Center, under the care of Hospice of Eastern Idaho.
Eunice was born December 4, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois to Harry William Lefferts and Emma Matilda Schmidt. She had a younger brother, Edward William Lefferts . She was raised in Chicago where she attended Pilgrim Evangelical Lutheran School and Lakeview High School. She married Fred Christian Halkar on September 11, 1943 in Chicago. They lived in Santa Monica, California & Richmond, Virginia while Fred was in the Navy. They made their home in Chicago where they bothed worked in the bakery business. They were blessed with 4 children, Harry William in 1949 & Linda June in 1951 both born in Chicago before moving to Baraboo, Wisconsin where they were blessed with Karen Louise in 1953 & Howard Henry in 1955.
The powdery snow of Sun Valley enticed Eunice & Fred to move the family to Idaho in l958. They purchased Duke's Bakery and changed the name to Halkar's Danish Bakery. Eunice was the cake decorator, clerk, accountant & favorite job, the delivery person. After Fred's health failed they sold the bakery to Carsten's and she worked for Helm's Bake House, the Airport Restaurant, Albertsons Bakery for 20 years and part-time at Kesler's IGA until she was 78.
Eunice loved skiing, swimming, camping, bowling, vacations, playing bingo and especially spending time at family get-togethers. She enjoyed daily crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, growing tomatoes, tried golfing and loved playing the organ. She was a 1st Lieutenant in Lakeview High R.O.T.C. Band where she played the Barotone horn. For a short time she was a member of the Eagles in Idaho Falls.
After Fred died in 1980, she enjoyed the companionship of Harold Lewis for many years until his death. In 2008 she married Lynn Clousing. They enjoyed trips to California, Niagara Falls, & a cruise to Alaska. Her laughter & smile will be remembered by all of her family & friends.
Eunice is survived by her children Harry (Vickie) Halkar of St. Anthony, Linda Carter (Lynn) Beck of Idaho Falls,, Karen Halkar & Howard Halkar both of Idaho Falls, and her husband Lynn of Idaho Falls; her brother Ed Lefferts of Lexington Kentucky & his family in Morton Grove, Illinois, & Lexington, Kentucky; . She has 13 grandchildren & 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Halkar, her Sister-in-Law, Doloris (Dolly) Leffertsand, great-granddaughter, Naticia Cortez. The family would like to thank Hospice of Eastern Idaho for their help and loving care during the last few weeks of Eunice's life.
Funeral services will be at 11:00a.m., Saturday, Aug 6, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, corner of Sunnyside & Rollandet. The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 am before the service. Arrangements are under the direction of Buck-Miller-Hahn Funeral Home in Idaho Falls. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice of Eastern Idaho.
