Harvey W. Mauth

Harvey W. Mauth, 94, of Idaho Falls, ID, died on Friday, August 26 at his home of age-related causes. He was born December 2, 1916 in Columbus, WI to John F and Ottilie Holsten Mauth. Following graduation from a County Normal School, he taught in a one-room rural elementary school for four years. He then attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1941 with a degree in agronomy.
Following his college graduation Harvey married Sylvia J. Kusrow in Columbus. They were married for 48 years until her death in 1989.
Harvey worked for Rogers Brothers Seed Company for 43 years, starting in Idaho Falls in 1941. He held numerous positions with the company including sales, seed production, and plant breeding in various locations in the Midwest and western US. He was especially interested in the sweetcorn breeding program and developed two very successful hybrids including Jubilee and Silver Queen. He returned to Idaho Falls in 1955 where he worked in various management positions, retiring as Board Chairman, President and CEO.
Harvey was active in seed organizations and served as an officer in many of them. He traveled throughout the world with staff of the Foreign Agricultural Service of the U.S.D.A. whose purpose was to negotiate with government officials of those countries to open markets for US seed sales.
In 1993 he married Ruth D. Hackman. She preceded him in death in 1997.
Locally Harvey was an active member of St John Lutheran Church and of Rotary, and had been involved with the YMCA, Junior Achievement, and the Senior Corps of Retired Executives. His hobbies were gardening, fly fishing, reading, photography and a love for traveling that took him on business and pleasure trips to all 50 states and all continents but Antarctica.
Harvey is survived by his children--Gary (Mary) Mauth of Oak Harbor, WA, Joanne (David) Rau of Plano, TX, and Debbie Hansen of Lake Oswego, OR; six grandchildren-Jeff (Dian) Mauth of Kennewick, WA, Kevin (Corina) Mauth of Paris, France, Stefanie (Michael) Ramos of Plano, TX, Kelly (Ed) Easterling of Corvallis, OR, Marc (Shelly) Hansen of Tualatin, OR and Darren (Kelly) Hansen of Sherwood, OR, and stepson Kenneth Hackman of Ft Lauderdale, FL; and 11 great grandchildren-Kyle, Anna and Luke (WA), Tiffany and Matilda (France), Alex, Samantha and Natalie (TX), Charlie and Luke (OR) and Abigail (FL). He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and son in law, Doug Hansen.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at St. John Lutheran Church, 290 7th Street in Idaho Falls, with Pastor Jerry Reinke, officiating. A viewing for family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th Street in Idaho Falls, and at the church one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday. Burial will be at a later date in the Hillside Cemetery, Columbus, WI. The family suggests memorials may be sent to St John Lutheran Church, 290 7th Street, Idaho Falls, ID 83401.
