Helen Fowler

Helen Fowler of New Plymouth, Idaho, age 91, passed away of natural causes on December 18, 2013, at Karcher Estates, Nampa, Idaho. She was born on April 20, 1922, in Patrick, Arkansas, to Charles and Elizabeth Baker. She spent her childhood in Arkansas, caring for her two younger sisters for a few years after her mother's death when Helen was 13 years old. She met Orvil C. Fowler, and on January 12, 1940 they were married. In 1941, Orvil hitchhiked from Arkansas to Idaho, looking for work. Helen and their firstborn followed shortly after, and they lived in New Plymouth. Work was scarce, and because the country was at war, Orvil found work at the shipyards in San Francisco, moving the family there in 1943. Their second child was born in 1944. Helen and the children moved back to New Plymouth when Orvil was drafted during World War II. Orvil returned to New Plymouth after being wounded in the Pacific. They farmed briefly in the Black Canyon District, until Orvil began work for the Postal Service. During the next few years, four more children were born. Helen and Orvil lived in New Plymouth until 1956, when they moved to Fullerton, California where Orvil continued to work for the Postal Service. Helen continued her role as homemaker, taking care of their six children. In 1969, Helen and Orvil moved back to New Plymouth, where they settled, and then retired in 1984. Helen was a wonderful mother and wife, always concerned for everyone else's feelings and welfare. She was a hard worker, and an EXCELLENT cook. She loved having company, and greatly looked forward to the summers when family from out of town would visit. If anyone ever left her table hungry, it was most definitely their own fault. Raising six children was a difficult task, but she managed to make it look easy. She loved to laugh, and enjoyed every moment spent with her loved ones. To her grandchildren, she was a second mother, always there to kiss a boo-boo, and lend an ear if one was needed. She made the best cup of "coffee", just the right amount of milk and sugar to add taste to the coffee!! As she got older, she relished the additions to the family in the way of great-grandchildren, and enjoyed time with them and their friends. Holidays at her house were a very special time, one that just couldn't be topped anywhere! She was preceded in death by her husband, Orvil, son Charles (Chuck), son Robert (Bob), granddaughter Kristin Luna (Foster), sister Minnie Burrell and brothers Homer and Henry Baker. She is survived by her daughters Patricia Fowler of Caldwell, Idaho, Peggy Throne (James) of Grants Pass, Oregon, and Esther Murphey (Robert) of Nampa, Idaho; son David Fowler (Kathy Hix) of Chino, California; sisters Mary Hartung of Boise, Idaho, Ann Balter (Bill) of New Plymouth, Idaho; 7 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Helen's name to your favorite charity, c/o Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, Idaho 83661. In keeping with Helen's wishes, a brief funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 21st, at 1:00 p.m., at the Shaffer-Jensen Chapel in New Plymouth, Idaho.
