Jane E Kanatzar

Our beloved Jane passed away on January 30, 2018. She was born on March 15, 1923, in Sterling, Illinois to Joseph H. Bartel and Ethel V. Logsdon Bartel during such a severe blizzard that the snowdrifts covered the picket fence. Jane was named after the heroic Dr. Jane Keefer who walked from town that night to their farmhouse. Her mother had four children in five years, Bob, Jane, Don and Ann.... in the days when homes had no electricity or plumbing. Her sister Patsy was born in 1932 but tragically passed away in 1936 from appendicitis. The four older children remained close all their lives. Jane lived on the dairy farm attending local schools until she was thirteen when, because of a spinal curvature, she spent a year in bed in a cast, which led to her lifelong love of reading. In high school she was editor of the school paper, got a trophy in debate and performed in all the plays. She attended the University of Illinois, where she lived in the 4-H house, worked for the university newspaper, graduated in 1946 with a B.S. in Home Economics Education and made many lifelong friends. Soon after, she met and married (Hub) Leo H. Hubbell. They bought a house in Champaign and had three children, Marilee, Melissa and Joel. The family moved to Clarendon Hills, IL in 1956 and to Idaho Falls, ID in 1961. With the children in school, Jane began teaching Home Economics at Bonneville High School. She earned her M.A. in Guidance and Counseling from Idaho State University in 1972 and served students as a counselor at Bonneville until she retired in 1987. She was a popular teacher and was active in many organizations and in politics. She was president of Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and a lifelong member of Idaho Education Association, PEO and NEA. Jane loved to travel and with Hub traveled all around the world. Hub passed away in 1975. Jane met Harry H. Kanatzar, a man who brought much happiness to her life. With their marriage they successfully united two families. Jane was always creative, with an artist's eye and a love of beauty. She designed the floor plan and built an elegant home with a kitchen still considered innovative. She was a professional seamstress, a master at needlepoint and enjoyed making jewelry. Jane and Harry lived the good life, spending winters in Arizona, traveling overseas and across the states visiting friends and family. Grandchildren held especially dear places in their hearts. Harry passed away in 2008. Jane was born with a sense of adventure and a love of life. She was a leader with strong principles and stood up for what she felt was right. She had a kind heart, a generous spirit and served her community volunteering for many organizations and her church. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by two daughters, Marilee (Dan) Sullivan, Melissa Hubbell; a son Joel (Joy) Hubbell; grandchildren, Isaac Frazier, Rebecca (Tom) Avila, Anna Frazier, Andy Hubbell, Audrey (Keith) Baedke and her family by marriage, Steve (Debi) Kanatzar, Kathy Kanatzar and Doug Kanatzar; grandchildren Jackie (Tommy) Ripke, Stephen (Valerie) Kanatzar, Cameron Kanatzar, Nick Morrison, and Ashley Morrison. Great grandchildren are Maxine, Samantha and Dominic Avila, Theodore and Bennett Baedke, Jayden, Jaxton and Alonzo Garcia, John Henry and Harry Ripke, Danny Syler and Hailey Kanatzar. Jane's life will be celebrated March 19, 2018, with services at Buck Miller Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th Street, Idaho Falls with a visitation at 6 p.m. and a rosary at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. March 20, 2018, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1690 E. 17th St, Idaho Falls, reception to follow services and inurnment at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Red Cross or to the St John Paul II Parish Legacy Fund.
