Joann M. Henman Abbott, 81, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2015, at her home in Dubois, of natural causes. Joann was born March 5, 1934, in Mason City, Nebraska, to Elzie Wilbur Henman and Anna Vera Mortensen Henman. She is the 4th child of 12. She moved with her family in 1941 to Wapello, Idaho, then to Medicine Lodge in 1945, and in 1947 the family settled in Dubois. Joann attended school in Clark County. Joann loved to have fun and told of running with her brother John to school, which was a mile from home. He was running for track, but she ran just to have fun with John. As she and her high school friends also liked to have fun, she wants everyone to know that they did not steal the cow; she followed the sheep into the school on her own. On February 1, 1953, she married the love of her life, Wayne Tavenner, and they lived in the Medicine Lodge area and raised four children: Byron, Norman (Tubb), Susanne and Laurie. Many, many years of rodeos and school activities were the busiest and the happiest times for the Tavenners. Joann was an excellent donut maker. She made many for school activities; one year she made 120 dozen! Joann and Wayne loved to dance at the Medicine Lodge School rodeo dances and at the Eagles Lodge. She and Wayne served many years in the Clark County Rodeo Club as officers and directors and were the main instigators and workers in getting the rodeo grounds moved to the present location. Joann served as High School Rodeo Advisor from 1968-1983. Wayne passed away in 1981. Joann married John Abbott on December 24, 1986, and made their home in Dubois where she continued to be active in the local community. John passed away in 2009. Her dedication to the Clark County 4-H was shown by her leadership and service for over 25 years. In 2003 she was the first inductee to the State 4-H Hall of Fame, which was a very great honor to her. Joann is survived by her children, Byron (Judy) Tavenner, Norman (Jeri) Tavenner of Dubois, Susanne (Andy) Baker of St. Anthony, and Laurie (Ron) Moosman of Lindon, Utah; 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, John Henman of Garden City, Richard Henman of Rigby, and Lester Henman of Dubois; and sisters Alice Olson of Price, Utah, and Linda Toler of Dubois. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Wayne and John, sisters, Ruth Conrad, Joyce Mortensen, Delores Thompson and Mary Lou Wellard, and brothers Robert Henman and Donald Henman. Memorial Services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2015, at the Dubois Community Church. Visitation with the family will be held from 11:00-11:45 a.m. Burial will be at the Small Cemetery in Medicine Lodge. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heritage Hall.
