John Lee Costner, 52, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011. A viewing for family and friends will be from 4-7 p.m., Thursday, June 9, 2011 at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, June 10, 2011 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Fruitland. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Payette. John, son of Donna Mae and Bob Costner was born on Oct. 4, 1958 in San Diego, CA. The family moved to Payette, ID, and this place became his home. John graduated from the University of Idaho. He enjoyed a career as a professional architect both in private practice and for the State of Idaho. John was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, spending time hunting, fishing and camping, exploring the high country on four wheeler and horseback. As a youngster, John learned to ride rough stock from the great Casey Tibbs by trading stall cleaning at Casey's ranch in Lakeside, CA. John knew that the outside of a horse was good for the inside of a person and raised his family to include them. John served his community as a Lieutenant with the Payette County Sheriff's Reserves and as a member of the Payette School Board. John built a loving extended family and circle of dear friends. John was preceded in death by his mother, Donna Mae; his grandmothers, Carmelita Slack and Marie Costner; and his grandfather, Homer Slack. He is survived by his wife, Cathy; parents, Bob and Mary Lou Costner; children, Erin Sallee, Alexander Costner and Nathan Costner; grandboys, Claeb Sallee and Kyler Kindall; his siblings, Clarence Costner, Claudia Fields, Donna Costner and Cory Costner; many nieces and nephews. Justin Burns and Rory Wetzel spent much of their time in the Costner household and John loved them as sons. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Mountain States Tumor Institute, c/o Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 7303, Payette, ID 83661.
