John Frederick Smith

John Frederick Smith was born on October 30, 1927 in Freeport, Illinois. His parents were Frederick Gund Smith and Violet Skroglund Smith. He passed away on November 8, 2014 at the Gables of Ammon in Idaho Falls. Fred graduated from the University of Utah at Logan and was stationed at Mountain Home Air Force base in Idaho. He served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1953. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf on his weekends. A year after his wife Oma died in Aiken, South Carolina, he moved to Idaho Falls near the golf course and continued with his love for the outdoor activities. During Fred's work career he was one of three men selected to introduce the German made Wagner paint compressor to the USA. They worked with the U.S. paint manufacturers to reformulate American paint to work with the compressor. He was introduced to his current wife Carol thru mutual friends in the spring of 2007. On October 30, 2007, Fred's children Rik and Annika had a surprise 80th birthday party for him. After a whirlwind courtship Fred and Carol were married on January 12, 2008. On January 14 they left on their honeymoon. They traveled thru the Panama Canal, the Hawaiian Islands, they walked on the Great Wall of China, saw the Taj Mahal, and the Pyramids in Egypt, they visited Rome, Monte Carlo and to home. That summer they went to Scotland to visit Carol's ancestral village and several famous golf courses. In January 2011 they flew to New Zealand and cruised around Australia. In August of that year Fred had 3 TIAS. On October 30, 2011, Fred's 84th birthday he had a major stroke. He spent the next 3 years in and out of hospitals, rehabs and nursing homes. As time passed his Dementia became worse, but he always knew who Carol was. In August 2014 he went to live at the Gables in Ammon. On October 30, 2014, his son Rik came to help celebrate Fred's 87th birthday. On November 8, 2014, Fred passed away quietly with is wife Carol and her daughter Cindy at his side. During the three years Fred was sick, Carol's daughter Kathy helped with his care. Fred is survived by his children from his first marriage, Frederick "Rik" Lidell Smith and wife Kim Warren and her children Will, Matthew and Elizabeth Warren, and Annika Smith Thompson and her husband Andrew Thompson and their son Drew Thompson; his wife Carol Mcilwaine Fischer-Smith and her three children, Katherine Fischer, Jordan Witbeck and his wife Sherma and their children, Ryan, Kaleb, Logan, McKenna and Madison; Cynthia Fitzpatrick and husband, Daniel and daughters Sarah and Mikaela, Barbara Estry and husband Daniel and her sons Brandon and Brian, and Daniel's children D.C., Jonathan, Natalie, Amelia and Abby. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, corner of 17th and St. Clair in Idaho Falls. Arrangements are under the direction of Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home in Idaho Falls.
