John Lorenz Kohler, 45, of Boise, Idaho passed away unexpectedly during the night on May 19, 2024, of cardiac related issues.
John was born May 23, 1978, in Pocatello, Idaho to Diane and Donovan Kohler. He inherited a deep and abiding religious faith and love of the outdoors from his father, and a lifelong interest in reading and history from his mother. He also developed a keen passion for competitive games, particularly chess -- a passion that was honed throughout his life, and was reflected in his participation in a number of Chess Clubs in Pocatello, Boise, and Idaho Falls.John had a boundless enthusiasm for his hobbies and interests -- hiking, camping, fishing, movies, games, books, history -- and loved nothing more than sharing them -- through mentorship and teaching, recommendations and shared outings, and debate and discussion.After graduating from Highland High School in 1996, he worked in a number of jobs -- as a delivery driver in Pocatello, a forklift operator and factory worker in Lewisville. He held positions in construction, transportation, and delivery in Idaho Falls. He matriculated at Idaho State University, and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Secondary Education majoring in History and minoring in Biological Sciences. He worked as a substitute teacher in the Idaho Falls area, before teaching Science at Jerome Middle School. He deeply appreciated and cared for all of his students. In 2018, John moved to Boise to be closer to family, where he resided for the remainder of his life.John is survived by his mother, Diane Kohler(née Terveen); sister, Erin Kohler and brother-in-law Kevin Woodall; and brother Ryan Kohler, all of Boise, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his father, Donovan Kohler, of Idaho Falls, in 2016.A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 6th at 11:00 A.M. at New Sweden Cemetery in Idaho Falls.
