Joe was born March 7, 1928 to Richard F. Bauer and Clara Kasten Bauer in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. He graduated from Lincoln High school in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1945. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. Joe attained the rank of Corporal, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne division, E Company until November 1947. Following his discharge, Joe returned to Manitowoc to work in the Manitowoc Shipyards. In 1952, his joy of travel led him to respond to an ad for laborers at the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho. While commuting from Arco to the site, he met the love of his life and lifetime companion of 62 years, Glenda Lowry. They were married on December 20, 1952 at St Bernard's Catholic Church in Blackfoot, by then Father Constant M. Verhoeven. They returned to Manitowoc briefly before returning to their lifelong home of Idaho Falls. Joe was an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church for 60 years, serving as a CCD instructor and many other roles over the years. Joe enjoyed camping, skiing, and after retiring from Westinghouse in 1990 traveling to nearly every state including Alaska and Hawaii.
Joe is survived by his wife Glenda; son Joe (Barbara) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, daughters Jill Villarreal (Rudy) of Henderson, Nevada and Jeni Storms (Brian) of Menan; sisters Ione Steeber of Kellnersville, Wisconsin and Pat Hollen of Manitowoc Wisconsin (Stan); grandchildren Emily Keim (Andrew), Joseph Bauer, Jason Storms (Tawnya), Randall Storms (Kelley), Manuel Villarreal, and Tony Villarreal; great grandchildren Dylan Steele Winters and Hazel Peyton Keim. He is preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Amanda, brother Richard, and sisters Lucille and Mildred.
A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 4th, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 905 S. Lee Ave., Idaho Falls. Burial will follow in the Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the Mass. The family wishes to thank the staff of Access Home Care and Hospice and Turtle and Crane for their compassionate care of Joe over the last few months. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made in Joe's memory to the Bonneville County Historical Society.
