Joseph Katancik was born on April 5, 1958 on Leyte Island in the Philippines. He was adopted by Joseph when he was 3 months old and moved to the United States when he was 2 years old. He became an American citizen when he was 5. The judge asked him one question, "are you married? to which Joey said "no sir". The judge told him he would make a great American Citizen and he always was.

Being in the Air Force, Joseph moved the family frequently. They were in great Falls Montana for 6 years then moved to Homestead Florida where at 8 years old, Joe first learned to fish and loved it.

The next move was to Seattle where Joseph retired from the Air Force and met Midge. Joe gained a Mom and became the older brother to a sister and a brother.

The next family move was to California where Joe graduated from high school. After high school, Joe moved to Alaska for a short period of time before enlisting in the Coast Guard where he spent 4 years before moving back to Alaska to become a fisherman. Joe met and married Peggy. They moved to Washington state and had 2 children, Zachary and Becca. Joe moved back to Alaska to fish king crab in the Bering Sea and was the captain on the Sea Brooke and skipper of the Pro Surveyor for 13 years. A salmon fishing guide for the next 9 years, a career cut short by a life changing stroke. Joe spent the next 5 years with his parents in Seattle before moving to Payette, Idaho.
