Joseph Christopher Morreale, 88, died at his home on Sunday, January 1, 2012.
Giuseppe (Joseph) Morreale was born on June 9, 1923, to Alfredo and Caterina in New York City. Joe was raised in the Bronx, New York. He attended public schools and graduated from Evander Childs High School in 1941, where he played football and basketball. After graduation, he worked at a small radio manufacturing and development company until World War II. He enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1942 and served courageously in the European Theater of Operations. He saw combat at the invasion of Normandy, throughout France, Belgium (the Battle of the Bulge) and into Germany. He was awarded numerous medals and received commendations for his bravery under fire. Joe achieved the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged upon his return to the United States in October 1945.
Joe married Marie Hofmann in 1946 and worked for Pan American Airlines as a radio operator in Panama. He and his wife returned to the United States a year later when he enrolled at Columbia University, graduating with a degree in economics in 1950. They had two children and moved to California in 1959. They were later divorced in 1979. He resided in Garden Grove and Lake Forrest, California. Joe married Corliss Warren in 1980. This marriage ended in 2009.
Joe worked in the aerospace industry, and was involved in the development of numerous missile systems at W.L. Maxson Corporation, North American Aviation and Lockheed. He later worked in the computer er industry until his retirement in the late 1990s. He worked part-time during his retirement as "the world's oldest" toll booth operator on one of California's toll roads.
Joe moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in 2009. He resided at the Fairwinds retirement community where he served as president of the residents' organization and helped to advance multiple causes, including the installation of flag poles.
Joe had many interests including oil painting, hiking, football and travel. His home was adorned with his paintings. His hiking accomplishments including multiple trips through the Grand Canyon and successful ascents of Mt. Whitney (Sierras), Mt. Hood (Cascades), Mt. Fuji (Japan) and the Matterhorn (Alps). He loved watching football and his favorite team was the Green Bay Packers, which he tried out for after World War II. His travels included excursions throughout the United States, Europe, the Holy Land and Japan.
Joe is survived by a daughter, Jeanne (Jude) Baker, a son, Steve (Berlinda) Morreale, six grandchildren (Joe and Jeff Baker and Jennifer Galles; Helen, Emma and Luke Morreale), and three great-grandchildren (Chloe Baker and Tristan and Jocelyn Galles)
He was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 455 W. Sunnyside, in Idaho Falls where funeral services will be held on January 14, 2012 at 11:00 am. The family requests that in lieu of flowers please send a donation to the Disabled American Veterans or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
