Joseph Anthony Wieland

August 31, 1925 — June 15, 2012

IDAHO FALLS - Joseph A. Wielang, 86 of Idaho Falls passed away Friday June 15, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Care Center after a short illness. He was born August 31, 1925 at the family home outside of Durango, Colorado. He was the middle child with one older sister (Mary Alice Slade) and one younger brother (Robert Wielang). He had an idyllic childhood, riding horses, hunting, fishing and camping. He graduated from Durango High School in 1943 and almost immediately entered the Army Air Force and was stationed in Foggia, Italy for the duration of the War flying as a gunner on B-17s. He was extremely proud of his service and never tired of recounting his exploits to the grandkids.
On June 14, 1952 he married Gerry Ewing of Port Orchard, WA in the base chapel in Denver, Colorado. He was married 60 years and one day when he passed away. He was the father of seven children: Tony Wielang, Marci Cooke, Steve Wielang (Tere), Charles Wielang (Peggy), Bruce Wielang, Mary Wilson and Erik Wielang (Lori), 12 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He spent his career as a chemical engineer, retiring from the Idaho National Laboratory in 1985. He was active in the Cursillo and the Boys Scout of America, the Soup Kitchen and St. Vincent de Paul food bank. He had an interesting life. He liked to take the kids and grandkids traveling to most of the National Parks in the west and the family favorite, the Canyon lands in Southern Utah. He and his wife Gerry made 4 trips to Europe and every state in the union except Alaska and Hawaii. He loved to fly fish any chance he got even in his later years. A rosary was said at Buck Miller Hann Funeral Home, Friday June 22 at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass was held Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Christ the King Catholic Church. The family met with friends immediately following the mass at the Parish Hall. Interment was at Grove City Cemetery in Blackfoot later that day. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name at St. Vincent DePaul food bank, Idaho Youth Ranch or a charity of your choice.
