On Tuesday, May 19, 2015, Joyce Hindman Ayers died of a heart attack in her home in Idaho Falls, ID. Our lovely lady, wife and mother will be sorely missed but will no longer be struggling with several medical issues she faced. Joyce was born in Huntingdon, PA on September 23, 1941to Frank and Pauline Hindman. She graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1959 and completed training at Altoona Hospital in Altoona, PA as a Registered Nurse She joined the U.S. Air Force in 1963 and served for two years at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, WA, achieving a rank as First Lieutenant. While at Fairchild, she met Arnold L. (Ron) Ayers, Jr. who was visiting friends from the University of Idaho. They were married on April 24, 1965 in the Fairchild AFB Chapel. In April, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. After a brief sojourn in Olympia, WA they moved to Idaho Falls, ID in late 1965. Joyce worked in both LDS and Sacred Heart Hospitals. She was very active in the Democratic Party Primary of 1968. Her two children, Michelle and Hugh, were born in 1968 and 1970 in Idaho Falls. In 1970, they moved to the University of Idaho (UofI) to begin her college education and to allow Ron to complete a Masters degree. After completing many courses at UofI, they spent over three years in New Jersey. Joyce and Ron returned to Idaho Falls in early 1976. She graduated from Idaho State University with a B.S.(RN) in 1986. She spent time as Director of Nursing for both Good Samaritan Nursing Home and the Behavioral Health Center before returning to direct patient care at EIRMC. In her nursing career, she covered most areas of hospital nursing but her first love was pediatrics. She was active in her church and in the community. She also sang in the Trinity Church Choir. She was a member and Team Leader in the IF Soup Kitchen within her Church for about 15 years and was a member of their board of Directors at the time of her death. She was also a volunteer for Friends in Service Here (FISH). She enjoyed traveling with trips to Nicaragua and Kenya and extensive traveling around the United States and Canada. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Arnold L. (Ron) Ayers, Jr.; a daughter, Michelle Marie (Glenn) Howald, of Bremerton, WA; a son Hugh Arnold Ayers, of Hillsboro, OR; granddaughter, Elizabeth Marie Howald; and two brothers and a sister. A memorial service will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 237 N. Water in Idaho Falls, on Friday, June 5 at 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the memorial service. Donations can be made in lieu of flowers in her name to Trinity Methodist Church.
