Kenneth Eugene Derr died in the Hospice Home of Ammon, ID on December 5, 2015 at the age of 94 of congestive heart failure.
Kenneth was born on June 16, 1921 in Tremont, PA to James and Elsie Derr. He graduated from Tremont High School in 1939 and enrolled in the Army Air Corps in January 1942. He served as aircraft pilot, towed targets in B-26's, attended A-26 training where he did bombing and strafing, and also flew navigation trips using radio, pilotage and radar navigation.
After military service he received technical training and worked as an electrician and in the air conditioning and heating system repair fields.
Kenneth married Elizabeth Martha Olga Breuer in December 1955. After moving to Pompton Lakes, NJ the couple raised four children. He worked for Reinauer Brothers Oil Company and Eastern Oil Company. After retiring they both moved to Myerstown, PA. His children remember him as a devoted father who was always willing to lend them a hand. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.
Kenneth and his wife were active and dedicated members of Friedens Lutheran Church of Myerstown, PA and often volunteered at the gift shop in Spang Crest Manor, Lebanon, PA. They were active in various hiking clubs both in NJ & PA. Kenneth loved playing golf in his retirement years. Also an avid walker, he won first place in many of the local senior walks in PA and was a member of the American Legion.
Kenneth and family took many camping trips together, up and down the east coast in their pop-up trailer. They both loved to travel and visited their daughter Lisa at every Air Force base she was stationed.
Kenneth is survived by wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Derr of Idaho Falls; children Kurt Derr (Jill) of Idaho Falls, Carl Derr of Haskell, NJ, Lisa Harvey of Albuquerque, NM, Eric Derr of Ventnor, NJ.; brother, Harry Lee Derr (Gladys) of Tremont, PA; sister, Kathleen Derr Morgan of Myerstown, PA; 4 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: James Henry Derr, Carl William Derr, and Theodore Robert Derr; and sisters, Florence Hughes and Marian Elaine Klein.
Funeral services with military honors will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E 17th St., Idaho Falls.
