Lawrence Mellette Harmston

December 26, 1922 — March 18, 2013

Lawrence M. Harmston, 90, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2013 at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls. Lawrence was born December 26, 1922 in Roosevelt, Utah to Arthur Mellette Harmston and Elise L. Trinnaman Harmston. He was one of 6 children and grew up working on his parents ranch outside Roosevelt. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Roosevelt, UT. He joined the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1942 and was called to active duty in November 1942. He trained as a Hospital Corpsman. During WW II he served aboard the USS Cambria, with the 5th Marines, USS Independence and the Naval Hospitals at Aiea Heights, Territory of Hawaii and Long Beach, CA. In January 1946 he was released from active service and attended Idaho State University, majoring in Pharmacy. He was recalled to active duty in September, 1950. He was stationed at Bremerton Naval Shipyard, with the 1st Marine Division in Korea, the USS Walton, USS O'Bannon, NAD West Loch, HI, Naval Training Center, San Diego, CA, San Diego Naval Hospital, CA Naval Hospital Subic Bay,Republic of Philippines, Naval Hospital Corps School, San Diego, CA, Naval Communications Station Londonderry, Northern Ireland and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA. He retired in 1976 as a Master Chief Hospital Corpsman after 33 years of service and moved to Idaho Falls, ID.
He was a volunteer at the Science Center and the Museum of Idaho. He is survived by his wife of 62 ½ years, LaDean, son Donald Harmston of San Diego, CA, daughter Kaye Grosvenor of Los Angeles, CA and his brother Charles Harmston of Mesa, Az. He had three grandchildren, Rebecca, Jennifer and Nicholas and one great grandson, Liam. Hobbies included gardening, exercising at Apple fitness, reading and volunteering at the Museum of Idaho. No one who met him didn't like him. A celebration of life will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013 at the Museum of Idaho, 200 North Eastern Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Museum of Idaho 200 N. Eastern Avenue Idaho Falls, Idaho 83402 are suggested. Online condolences may be left at www.buckmillerhann.com.
