Lawrence Donald Person

March 13, 1923 — April 25, 2011

Lawrence Person, 88, passed away at home, surrounded by his family, on April 25, 2011. Lawrence could no longer be without the love of his life, Larraine. He stayed with us for four years after her death in 2007 and then decided it was time to join her.
Funeral services will at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 29, 2011, at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Ontario, Oregon. Burial will follow at Park View Cemetery in New Plymouth. A visitation and viewing for family and friends will be from 4:00 - 7:00, Thursday April 28, 2011 at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette. Condolences may be made to the family at www.shaffer-jensenchapel.com.
Lawrence was born in Payette, Idaho on March 13, 1923. He was the son of Hilbert and Alice Person. He was the oldest of five children and was very lucky to be part of a wonderful and loving family. He graduated from Payette High School in 1941. Not long after graduation Lawrence joined the US Navy and served in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. He loved to tell stories about his experiences and friendships that were so important to him during WW II. Lawrence was very proud to have served his country and always supported, both verbally and monetarily, all United States military veterans of all ages.
Lawrence married Larraine Schamber on June 19, 1949, at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Ontario, Oregon. Lawrence and Larraine had three children, Rosanne (Emil) Kolar of Meridian, Mel (Terri) Person of Fruitland, and Valerie (Monty) Olson of Payette.
Lawrence went to work for Idaho Power Company shortly after his discharge from the Navy. He retired after 36 years of service in 1985. After short stays in Payette and Boise, Lawrence moved his family to Oxbow, Oregon and started the most memorable adventure of his career. He loved being part of the excitement associated with living in Hells Canyon during one of the largest construction projects in Idaho Power history. He and Larraine developed many life-long friendships and collected unlimited memories during their 7 years in "The Canyon".
In 1963 Lawrence transferred to Payette and built a house in Fruitland. The house he and his father-in-law built was home to Lawrence and Larraine for the next 47 years. Dad loved the outdoors and is happy to be reunited with his old hunting buddies around the campfire. He also loved to garden. He honestly believed that it was against some law to discard a broken item and buy a new one. This was only allowed after fixing the old item a minimum of 5 or 6 times. Lawrence subscribed to the principle that there was nothing that couldn't be fixed with hog rings and duct tape.
He was a wonderful father, grandfather, husband, and friend. We will miss him terribly. Lawrence was preceded in death by his wife (Larraine), a sister (Marcella) and a brother (Norman). He is survived by his best friend and brother (Wallace Person) of Payette, a wonderful sister and nephew (Madelyn and Dale Goodell) of Independence, Oregon, his children, eight grandchildren (Timbra, Melanie, Ryan, Kaela, Kim, Matt, Carrie, and Luke), and thirteen and a half great grand children.
The family would like to thank Heart and Home Hospice for their loving care during some difficult times. Memorials may be made in Lawrence's name to Pilgrim Lutheran Church or Heart and Home Hospice c/o Shaffer Jensen Memory Chapel, PO Box 730, Payette, Idaho 83661.LAWRENCE DONALD PERSON - FRUITLAND
