Leonard Ahlstrom

December 16, 1924 — June 12, 2012

IDAHO FALLS - Leonard Cox Ahlstrom, 87, long-time resident of Idaho Falls, ID died from natural causes on Tuesday June 12th at a rest home in Bountiful, UT. Born in Cedar City, UT, December 16, 1924 to Tipton Pitt and Lillian (nee Cox) Ahlstrom, Leonard grew up on a small farm near Cedar City until he was called to service in the Army in 1942. Following boot camp, Leonard trained as a radioman onboard B-24 bomber, but he spent the bulk of his military service in Kunming, China working as an air traffic controller. Kunming was the home of the famous Flying Tigers and Pappy Boynton prior to the U.S. entering WWII. Leonard was a long time member of the VFW and Idaho Falls Elk's club. Leonard led a very active life to the very end. He was an avid golfer, and bowler and he loved to visit the casinos. Floating down the Snake River with Leonard on a fishing venture became the source of many hilarious stories over the years, by grandson, Shane and son-in-law, Bill. He lived in his own home and drove himself everywhere until just a couple of months ago. Leonard married Jean Burnham in Cedar City, UT on June 6, 1947. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean and son-in-law Kim Peterson. He is survived by his brother, Harry of Salt Lake City; 2 daughters, Karen (Bill) Hollenbeck of Portland, Oregon and Denese Peterson of Aguanga, California; 2 grandchildren, Shane (Karen) Jaeger and Jennifer (Burk) Reynolds; 7 step-grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Leonard will be remembered as a kind-hearted man who was always willing to lend a helping hand with a friendly smile and kind word. Daddy (grandpa) may your golf scores be low and bowling scores high. We will miss you. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 Noon Saturday June 30, 2012 at Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
