Leonard Gus Baer

Leonard Gus Baer, 93, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, 2012 in Ontario. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 28th at Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette. Cremation arrangements and services are under the direction of Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, Payette. Condolences may be made to Leonard's family at www.shaffer-jensenchapel. Leonard was born in Payette on April 4, 1919 to Ferdinand and Leondina Baer. He attended grade and high school at Payette and graduated in 1938. He married Alta Brown of Payette in 1945. They were married for 58 years and had a son and daughter. In 2005 he married Joyce Hargett. Leonard joined the Navy in July 1938. He was a veteran of WWII and Korean War. He served aboard the USS Chicago and USS Cabot during WWII and aboard USS St. Paul during the Korean conflict. His ships participated in many major battles in the Pacific and received 12 battle stars in WWII and eight in the Korean War. He also served aboard the USS Keppler, USS Badoeng Strait, USS Sabine and USS Shangri La. He retired from the Navy after 20 years of service and moved to Payette in 1958. He worked as a field man for American Fine Foods for 23 years and retired in 1983. His hobbies included yard work, gardening, traveling and fishing. He was a member of Washoe Masonic Lodge AF & AM #28, Royal Arch Chapter #8, King Solomon Council #4, Fleet Reserve Association, V.F.W. Post #2738, American Legion Post #0033 and Elks Lodge #1690. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; his son, Ken Baer (Marlena); his daughter, Sharon Worley (Tom); grandchildren, Andy Baer, Jenni Baer, Amy Worley, and Thomas (Delzia) Worley; great grandchildren, Eban Baer, Brynn Baer, Abigayle Baer, and Tylen Pavlousky; brothers, Vinnie Baer and Harold Baer; and a sister, Henrietta Barton. Also included as family are Joyce's children, Ron and Sue Debban and family, Bonnie and Bill Smith and family, Judy and John Lockner and family. He was preceded in death by three brothers, David, Edward, and Rein; one sister, Bertha; a granddaughter, Paige Worley; and a great grandson, Jacob Norris. Leonard was a kind and loving person and will be missed. He was proud of his family and his country.
