Lloyd Charles Pickett, 83, died at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center on June 23, 2014 after succumbing to injuries received being struck by a car. Lloyd was born June 27, 1930 in Edison, NE, to Mark and Roberta Pickett. At the age of 3 his family moved to a homestead near Riverton, WY where they lived in a 14' x 20' tar paper shack. He graduated from Morton (WY) High School and went on to college receiving a BS in Agronomy (1954), a MS in Plant Pathology (1957), and a PhD in Adult Education (1963), all from the University of Wyoming (UW). Lloyd served as an officer in the U.S. Army in Germany in 1955-56.
In 1962 he was introduced to Catherine (Kay) Weilep and they visited for a few minutes. She went home to Wisconsin and they began a courtship via letter correspondence. On June 1, 1963, Kay and Lloyd were married in Gilmanton, WI, leaving the next day to Kabul, Afghanistan as a member of a USAID team assigned to develop a College of Agriculture at Kabul University. During the six years in Kabul his children, Rachel and Steven, were born. Bozeman, MT became their home from 1969 through 1976. Lloyd worked at the Montana State University Cooperative Extension Program serving as supervisor of Native American Programs.
They moved to Tanzania for the next 6 years as part of a USAID effort to improve agricultural schools throughout the country. The family lived for 2 years in the small village of Mpwapwa, the next 4 years in the capital city of Dar es Salaam. The family had many wonderful adventures touring African game parks as well as traveling throughout Europe. The family returned to Bozeman, MT where Lloyd started a home repair/remodeling business. He was able to fix or build almost anything. After retirement, Lloyd worked part time as a potato disease inspector for MSU. Lloyd and Catherine moved to Idaho Falls in 1997 after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He lovingly cared for her for 12 years until her death.
Lloyd was a man of integrity, intellect, and achievement. Though extremely hard working and productive, he was very kind and loving, giving his time and skills to many causes. Besides crossing things off his "to-do" list, he liked traveling and keeping up with current events and the stock market.
Survivors include his daughter Rachel (Kevin) Poor of Idaho Falls, his son Steven Pickett of Boise, grandchildren Jesse Poor of Bellingham, WA, Erin Poor of Idaho Falls, Olivia and Sienna Pickett of Boise, and his sister Shirley (Bob) Green of Rock Springs, WY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Roberta, and his wife, Kay.
A memorial service will be held July 19, 2014 at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 555 E. Street in Idaho Falls. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O Box 8462, Chicago, IL 60680-8462.
