Lois was born September 2, 1920, in Blackfoot, Idaho to Leonard John Josephson and Lora Adele (Currier) Josephson. She is remembered by her family as a wonderful mother and grandmother and a devoted teacher. Her early years were on the family farm in Pingree, Idaho where she attended school, often by riding there on horseback with her older brother, Lynn. A good student and an avid reader, Lois also became skilled at cooking, sewing, knitting, and crocheting, all of which became her hobbies and sources of the many gifts she gave to others. She graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1938 and attended business college in Boise where she met and married her first husband, Paul Hickerson in 1941. After WWII they moved to Payette, Idaho where she was active in the First Baptist church and became an elementary school teacher after receiving her teaching certificate and bachelors degree at the College of Idaho. Later she was awarded a Masters Degree in education.
In 1960 the family moved to Mill City, Oregon where she continued teaching school, finally settling in Albany, Oregon where she taught elementary and special education until her retirement in 1980. Lois and Paul divorced in 1972. In 1978 she married Coe Leavengood and, after retiring, spent many happy years traveling with him, wintering in Yuma, AZ, and assisting with the management of Leavengood Tree Farms. They were both devoted to the Willamette Community Church and dedicated to church outreach and mission programs. In later life Lois and Coe moved to the Mennonite Village. Coe died in 2003 and in 2010 she moved to the Quail Run Assisted Living Center where she received excellent care for the remainder of her life. Lois loved travel, but her greatest joys were her students, her children, and their descendants. For many years she sponsored children in need through the Child Fund.
Her greatest losses were those of her daughter, Janice Faye, who died in 1952 at age 2, and her son, Timothy Lee, who died in 1954 shortly after birth. Her parents and older brother, Lynn, preceded her in death. Her sons, James Hickerson of Cedar Crest, New Mexico and David Hickerson of Christmas Valley, Oregon, her grandsons David, Jeff, and Matt Hickerson, her granddaughter Angela Billings, and great grandchildren Kelsey Hickerson and Christopher, and Nicholas Billings survive her.
