Lois Smith Reed Matheney, 97, died Tuesday, April 6 at Wynwood Assisted Living Center. Lois was born July 4, 1912 in Sedgwick, Colorado to Raymond Leroy and Lulu Bennett Smith. When 2 years old they moved to Buhl, Idaho where they farmed. Lois graduated from Buhl High School in 1930 then attended Albion Normal School. She married Myrl Reed in 1931 and they had two sons, Bill and Glenn. They were divorced in 1936. She then attended Henager's Business School in Salt Lake City. During WWll time, she taught typing and shorthand at Filer High School.
In 1946 she married Arnold Austin Matheney. Austin had recently returned from WWII serving in the European theater. After their marriage, they purchased a farm in Eden, Idaho and raised Bill and Glenn there. In 1954 a daughter, Deanna, was born to them. Lois was involved in her children's activities and raised beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. She began her lifelong activity with the Presbyterian Church in Eden/Hazelton. Lois became active in the American Legion Auxiliary after World War ll, serving in many capacities culminating in Department President. In 1972 the couple moved to Twin Falls where Lois continued her love of service to others. She was active in the Twin Falls Presbyterian church in various capacities. Her love of gardening assisted her in providing flowers for church services for 23 years. She volunteered in the Magic Valley Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, was President and also served as flower chairman for many years. Lois assisted with the Miss Twin Falls pageant for years. She traveled extensively through her church work, Legion Auxiliary, and Hospital Auxiliary as well as the many personal trips she took with her husband, family and friends. She enjoyed playing in the bridge club in Eden/Hazelton for over 50 years. Her fourth of July birthday was always an important family celebration. Lois was truly a great lady and served her family and others with love throughout her life.
Lois is survived by her children, Bill of Twin Falls, Glenn (June) of Eden, and Deanna of Eagle. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband Austin, and her sisters Norma Brown and Leila Balis pre-deceased her. The family would like to express their appreciation to Wynwood Living Center for their loving care for over 11 years as well as St. Lukes Magic Valley Regional Medical center during her recent illness. A Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 12, 2010 at the First Presbyterian Church, 209 5th Avenue, North. Memorial donations are suggested to the American Legion Auxiliary Girl's State in care of June Reed 1349 E 900 S, Eden, Idaho 83325, First Presbyterian Church of Twin Falls, or donor's choice.
