Hazel "Lorene" Black Lance passed away Monday, February 20, 2012 at Desert Rose Retirement Estates in Twin Falls at the age of 95. She was born September 28, 1916 in Scipio, Utah to Arthur Myron Black and Hazel Emma Hanseen. They moved to the Eden, Idaho area when she was two years of age where she attended school and graduated from Eden High School in 1934.
She began working in the Eden post office in 1936 and met and married Vernon Lance January 10, 1937. This marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls, ID LDS Temple. She worked as a postal clerk with her husband, who served as postmaster, for 36 years until their retirement in 1972. Vernon and Lorene purchased a home in Eden. After Vernon passed away, Lorene lived in the same house for 60 years. She then moved to Twin Falls next to her daughter, Donna.
Lorene was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served throughout her life including Relief Society Secretary for many years and as Relief Society President. She and Vernon served as Temple workers in the Boise, ID LDS temple for 12 years from 1984 to 1996.
Lorene enjoyed crocheting and making afghans for her children and grandchildren. She also found joy in her hobbies of drawing , writing poetry and growing beautiful plants and flowers. You never went to "Grandma's" house that she didn't have homemade whole wheat bread with peanut butter and homemade jam along with cookies for dessert. That was always a treat to look forward to!
She was a very compassionate person and always cared for others and could always find someone "with worse problems than her own." She always told us children that if we were feeling down or sad, to be of service to others and we would feel better.
Lorene is preceded in death by her husband Vernon Lance in 1988; a son Gary Lance in 1986, brothers Ferrel Black, LaMar Black, Donald Black and a baby brother, Golden Black ; one sister, Enid McCauley.
She is survived by brothers Karl Black of Eden and Dan Black of Jerome and a sister Betty Lou Wright of Idaho Falls. Also surviving are two daughters, Beverly Weekes of Boise, ID and her children Richard (Darla) Weekes of Nampa, ID; Renee Weekes of Boise, ID and Robert Weekes of Boise, ID.
