Lorraine June Maxey

June 27, 1927 — March 9, 2014

Lorraine June Maxey, 86, of Rapid City, S.D, died peacefully on March 9, 2014 in Idaho Falls, ID.
Lorraine was born on June 27, 1927, to Emma and Bernard Mayer in Roscoe, S.D. She was the middle of three loving, independent, and vivacious daughters. She graduated from Roscoe High School in 1945 and continued her education in St. Louis, MO, receiving her certification in medical technology. After graduation, she moved to Huron, SD, where she met the love of her life, Russell E. Maxey.
Lorraine and Russ were married on September 1, 1948. Military life took them to Panama during the Korean conflict. Upon their return, they settled in Brookings, SD, where they started their family. Lorraine was a dedicated mother who raised three daughters while managing a career.
The family moved to Rapid City in 1956. Lorraine took a position as a medical technologist at St. John's Hospital, later moving to the Medical Arts Clinic where she managed the lab for many years.
Lorraine was a faithful and proud member of Calvary Lutheran Church, serving as president of the church council, a member of the Ruth Circle, and as a Sunday school teacher.
She was a 4-H leader and Master Gardener, an arts and theater enthusiast, active member of her book club, and avid sports fan. She loved to travel and would "shop ‘til she dropped" at every opportunity. She cherished every minute spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Lorraine shared her passion for the culinary, entertaining often, and bringing soup, bread, mustard, pickles, and fresh veggies to anyone who needed a lift, a treat, or an acknowledgement of love.
Friends and family were the center of her life. One of Lorraine's biggest joys was her loving and worldwide circle of friends. She treasured every one, and remained loyal for life.
Lorraine is survived by her three daughters, Debbie Scholbe (Scott) of Centennial, CO; Mary Jo Waters (Mike) of Idaho Falls, ID; and Jane Sims (Jason) of Sandy, UT; her sister, Bernice Egge of Des Moines, WA; her nephew, Richard Evans (Lisa) of Rapid City, SD; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Emma Mayer; her husband, Russell Maxey; her sister, Vivian Rose Evans; and her granddaughter, Julie Ann Jorgenson.
