Lorrene Edith Couch, a long-time resident of Caldwell and Fruitland, died surrounded by her family on Sunday the 10th of May at St. Luke's Medical Center in Meridian, Idaho.
Lorrene was born in 1930 in Eufaula, Oklahoma to Johnnie and Ruby Harris. She spent her childhood years on a farm in Oklahoma. She attended school through the eighth grade. She moved with her parents to Phoenix, Arizona in 1944. It was here in 1947 that she met the love of her life, James Amon Couch Jr. After six months of courting, they were married on July 31, 1947. Shortly after being married they moved to Arkansas for three short years. In 1950 they returned to Arizona and Lorrene gave birth to their son, Jimmie Doal Couch in 1951.
Lorrene worked hard her entire life. She did field work and they traveled between states following the crops. She picked many different fruit crops including dates, lettuce, potatoes and beets. Lorrene also picked cotton and would tell stories of how they picked sacks that weighed 100 pounds with their goal being to pick 1,000 pounds at the end of the day, and she didn't quit until it was done. Their field work landed them in Notus, Idaho in a labor camp in 1953. Their daughter, Barbara May Couch was born in 1956. This completed their family which she loved. Lorrene went to work for Crookhams Seed Company in 1960's where she was a crew boss. Those who worked with her looked up to her and could tell many stories about her work ethic and sense of humor. She retired in 1977 and moved to Fruitland, Idaho in 1978 where she spent the remainder of her life.
Lorrene's hobbies revolved around the outdoors. She loved to hunt birds, elk, and deer, but cottontail rabbits and grouse were her favorite. Her garden was her pride and joy. She loved to cook, bake and enjoyed canning the vegetables from her garden. When she couldn't be outside, playing a hand of Canasta or Poker passed the time. Lorrene cherished time spent with her family and friends.
She is survived by her half-sisters Jessielee and Lizzy; a son Jim couch and wife Wanda of Payette and a daughter Barbara Short of Fruitland. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Jamie Couch and wife Gretchen, Angie Spelman and husband Chris, Brandon Fowler, and Melanie DeLeon and husband John. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren that she loved dearly; Amberlee Couch, Kynlee Couch, Kenzy Spelman, Kade Spelman, and Lila May DeLeon (Toodle).
