Lyle E. Wonderlich

Dr. Lyle E. Wonderlich passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2012, at the age of 89. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Church of the Ascension, 371 Eastland Dr. N, Twin Falls. Lyle "Doc" Wonderlich was born February 24, 1923 to father, John Coleman Wonderlich and mother, Daisy Dean Magaw Wonderlich, at the farm home near Bloomington in Osborne County Kansas. He attended school in a one-room rural school house during grades one through eight, riding his pony to school during the lower grades and later his horse, Molly. He graduated from the Alton Kansas High School as Valedictorian of his class in 1941. He received his pre-medical education at the University of Kansas and Yale University. He enlisted and served in the Army Medical Corps from 1943-1945, and graduated from the University of Kansas Medical School in 1947. Immediately after graduation from medical school, he married Wilma June "Butch" Todd, on June 17, 1947, then they traveled to Salt Lake City, UT, where Doc was to serve a rotating internship at the University of Utah. His internship was served at Salt Lake County General Hospital during 1947 & 1948. After completion of his internship, Doc and Butch returned to his home-town area and set up a general practice in Osborne, Kansas, from the spring of 1948 to the spring of 1949, at which time Doc moved to Concordia, Kansas, to provide anesthesia services at St. Joseph's Hospital. In 1951, during the Korean Conflict, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force Medical Corps as a 1st Lt. He served as Chief of the Anesthesia Department at Keesler Air Force Base Hospital, Biloxi, MS, until his discharge in the fall of 1952 with the rank of Captain. Doc then entered a residency program in anesthesiology at the Fitzsimmons Army Hospital whose residency program was under the supervision of the University of Colorado, Denver. After completing this residency program he moved his family to Twin Falls, to practice anesthesiology at Magic Valley Memorial Hospital (now Magic Valley Regional Medical Center) in the spring of 1954. He received his certification from the American College of Anesthesia in 1955 and became a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology in 1957. Doc was in the private practice of anesthesiology at MVRMC, and early in his practice he traveled each Saturday to Gooding, Idaho, to assist in pulmonary surgery at the Gooding TB hospital. Before he retired from MVRMC he assisted in establishing the Same Day Surgery Center at the hospital. After retiring from MVRMC, Doc served as a Locum Tenen for Comp Health Medical Services. At this point, he retained medical licenses in thirteen states. He completely retired from the practice of anesthesiology in 1995 at the age of 72. Doc and Butch owned & bred many championship horses on their RoseAcre Farm west of Twin Falls. He was a charter member of the American Paint Horse Association, serving on their Executive Committee and receiving the Association's Distinguished Service Award in 1989. He and Butch were inducted into the Paint Horse Hall of Fame earlier this year. He was also a charter member and past Vice President of the American Paint Horse Foundation. He is a past President and director of the Idaho Paint Horse Association, as well as past Vice-President of the Idaho Quarter Horse Association, director of the Idaho Horse Council and a member of the Back Country Horsemen. Doc was a Master Mason in Twin Falls Lodge #45. He became a 33� Inspector General Honorary November 3, 2007, in the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Orient of Idaho. He was very active in the Southern Idaho Learning Center of the Scottish Rite, serving for 18 years on the Management Board. Doc was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension for 58 years, serving as a Lay Reader and Eucharistic Minister. Doc and Butch produced seven children: Sue Ann Wonderlich Young of Centralia, WA; Dr. Lyle R. Wonderlich (Kathy) of Nampa, ID; Dr. Steven T. Wonderlich (Jenee) of Keneohe, HI; Fritz A. Wonderlich (Jackie Wakefield) of Twin Falls, ID; John D. Wonderlich, deceased; Nancy J. Wonderlich Koonce of Twin Falls, ID; and Vance L. Wonderlich (Linda Hoffman) of Portland, OR. They have fourteen grandchildren: Tanya Young Pallas (Mike) of Chehalis, WA; Todd Young of Reston, VA; Travis Young (Amy) of Denver, CO; Troy Young of Rosemont, MN; Brian Wonderlich (Megan Mooney) of Boise, ID; Jason Wonderlich (Meghan) of Nampa, ID; John Wonderlich of Boise, ID; Lisa Wonderlich of Keneohe, HI; Elizabeth Oler (Tim) of Meridian, ID; Thomas Wonderlich of New Orleans, LA; Katherine Shuh (Tim) of East Grand Forks, MN; Amanda Miller (Mike) of Burke, VA; Arin Daigneau (Troy) of Maybell, CO; and Adam Koonce of Eagle, ID They also have ten great-grandchildren: Tyler & Megan Pallas of Chehalis, WA; Ella & Liam Wonderlich of Meridian,ID; Chance Helgasen of East Grand Forks, MN; Jasmin & Troy Daigneau of Maybell, CO; Lukas & Anne Wonderlich of Nampa, ID; and Isaac Miller of Burke, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Paint Horse Heritage Foundation (P. O. Box 961023, Ft. Worth, TX 76161) or Church of the Ascension Altar Guild (371 Eastland Dr. N, Twin Falls, ID 83301).
