Mark was born August 21, 1925, to Guy and Madeleine Obenchain in Rockford, Illinois. In 1936, at the age of 11, he moved with his family to Ketchum, Idaho. Mark enjoyed his childhood in Ketchum with many adventures including ice skating, skiing, and running his dog sled. In search for work, the family moved to Boise in 1942 after which Mark graduated from Boise High School in 1943. Always looking for fun and "not caring for school much," he and his cousins always found lots of entertainment in the foothills and the north end of Boise and beyond. In 1944 Mark joined the Army Air Corps in the hope of fulfilling his dream of becoming a pilot. As the war was winding down, he was sidelined to Marana Air Force Base in Arizona where for 13 months he crewed trainer planes. In December of 1945, he was honorably discharged and returned to Boise.
After his return to Boise, Mark met his future wife, Roxanne Kernen, at the Church of Christ. Table Rock was the setting for the proposal, and as demanded by Roxanne's father, there would be no wedding until Roxanne turned 18. November 20, 1947, the day after her 18th birthday, the happy couple wed.
Mark and Roxanne relocated to Payette, Idaho, in 1952 where Mark worked for the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. and later moved on to Wells & Davies meat packing plant. He eventually drove truck for various companies and finally retired, for good, at the age of 74. He always enjoyed working and felt much pride and joy in providing for his growing family. Being behind the wheel and embarking on many road trips was his idea of freedom and adventure. His lust for travel took Mark and Roxanne on cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal. One of their fondest trips was seeing large parts of the US via train. Mark's wonderful sense of humor and quick wit endeared him to many. He never knew a stranger and always looked forward to visiting with friends over a hot cup of coffee. Wherever Mark & Roxanne went, it was a sure thing they would run into someone that Mark knew. Tinkering in his garage with various projects gave him great pleasure. He used his woodworking skills to build a miniature replica of a small California town for Roxanne which represented where she lived as a child, complete with miniature train. He enjoyed helping people, and was always ready, willing, and able to lend a hand. His love of the Lord led him to a dedicated life of service as an Elder in the Church at Payette. Mark is survived by his beloved wife, Roxanne, and children, Dawn (John) Hay, Robin Obenchain, Mark (Gaye) Obenchain, Jr., Peggy (Oliver) Bates, eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and his brother, Duane Obenchain. He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Madeleine, a sister, Dawn, and his son, David.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christian Children's Ranch, c/o Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, Idaho 83661. The family would especially like to thank the staff of Wellsprings Assisted Living and XL Hospice for their compassionate care for Mark and Roxanne.
