Marilyn Stanger, long-time Idaho Falls resident and prominent local Republican figure passed away April 6, 2012 at the Bonaventure Retirement Facility in Idaho Falls from causes incident to age.
Marilyn was born on March 4, 1915 in Pocatello, Idaho to Edward H. Miley and Isobel Bonner Miley. Her parents, twin sister Kathleen Mclaughlin, sister Barbara Larsen and one grandson all preceded her in death. Marilyn married LeRoy Stanger on December 7, 1934 and was the mother of five children, two of which died in childbirth. Her husband died in 1978. She is survived by her sons Ronald (Janelle) of Layton, Utah, David (Patricia) of Idaho Falls and of Florence, Arizona; and Steven (Julie) of Idaho Falls, 6 grand children and 17 great grand children.
Politically active, Marilyn served in the Idaho State Legislature from 1985 to 1986. She was a member of the Idaho Farm Bureau, Idaho Wheat Growers Association, Idaho Gem Parliamentary Unit, and Idaho Falls Toastmistress Club (where she was President for several terms). She also served as a Republican Precinct Committeewoman for over 30 years and four terms as President of the Bonneville County Women and as a Bonneville County Committeewoman. She served as the Bonneville County Coordinator for the Regean-Bush campaign. Marilyn represented Idaho as a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging, and at a National Republican Convention. Marilyn was recognized as "The Outstanding Republican Worker" and was inducted into the Idaho Republican Hall of Fame in 1982.
In 1984, the Idaho Falls Toastmistresses Club honored her during the American Association of University Women's National History Week which recognized women for outstanding and continuing contributions in communities across the nation.
A tireless worker, Marilyn spent untold hours in service to a wide range of community, civic and charitable causes as a Red Cross volunteer, member of SCORE, church organizations and in fund raising activities for heart, cancer, mental health, and March of Dimes organizations. She also served for many years as the treasurer for the INEL retirees. Marilyn worked at INEL for 15 years in the Health and Safety Division.
The family wishes to thank the caring and considerate employees of Bonaventure and Creekside Hospice for their compassionate and thoughtful support of Marilyn during her last days.
The family also asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Idaho Falls Senior Citizens Community Center in Marilyn's name.
Services will be held at 11 am Saturday April 14, 2012, at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 East 17th Street, Idaho Falls. In accordance with Marilyn's wishes she was cremated so there will not be a viewing. Family will be available for one hour prior to the services to receive condolences. Interment will be at the Iona Cemetery immediately following the services.
