Marlowe Franklin Barber, 86, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2014, at his home in Idaho Falls. He was born on August 7, 1927, in Cross City, Florida, to Ivie Monford and Beulah Land Barber. He attended grade school through high school in Cross City, Florida. He joined the Navy before graduating and came back and graduated with his class. He served in the Navy for 20 years and retired as a Chief Machinist Mate. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam Wars. He married Colleen Clapp on April 1, 1961 in Idaho Falls. He was a Plank owner on the USS Long Beach that he was stationed on when it was being built in Boston. He sailed on it to Norfolk, Virginia, and was aboard it until he retired. He enjoyed fishing, traveling back and forth across the U.S. and he visited a lot of foreign countries while he was in the Navy. After retirement from the Navy, Marlowe began working in Newport News and Norfolk ship yards in Virginia, but he always yearned to come back to Idaho. When he was offered a great job at the INL site, he jumped at it and came back to what he always called home.
Marlowe was a quiet but very kind man. He loved having his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren around. He loved his donut eating cat "Chowder" who loved him as much. He will be missed for his weekly get together at the Zone to have a couple of beers and rehash old times. In the last couple of years, his health started to go, but he was always optimistic. He was a dedicated family man, honest and forthright and his word was a good as gold.
Survivors include his wife Colleen; two sons, Paul (Linda) Barber of Roseville, California, and Ivie Marlowe Barber of Idaho Falls; one daughter, Karen Smith of Rigby; grandsons, Blake (Jessica) Smith of Idaho Falls, Jason Barber of Long Beach, California, and Troy Barber of Roseville, California; granddaughter, Nichole (Javier) Hernandez of Idaho Falls; Great-grandsons, Christian Smith, Jackson Smith, and Gavin Hernandez, all of Idaho Falls; and great-granddaughter, Ava Hernandez of Idaho Falls; one step-grandson, Damehin Mackie of Idaho Falls; and two step-granddaughters, Tieler Deason and Keyonna Raburn, both of Idaho Falls.
