Nada Shirley Coonrod

November 30, 1917 — February 23, 2013

Nada Shirley Coonrod, 95, passed away Saturday, Feb 23, 2013 at the Cenoma House in Twin Falls, Idaho. She was born Nada Shirley Farrand to Arthur E. Farrand and Maud M. Farrand on Nov 30, 1917, in South English, Iowa. She married Albert E. Coonrod Sr. on April 19, 1941 in Waterloo Iowa. They met at the Iowa School for the Blind. Her husband of 63 years passed away on Nov 10, 2004 in Twin Falls. She was the last surviving sibling of her immediate family. Nada graduated from Centerville High School and from Capital City Commercial College obtaining her degree in secretarial work. She was always proud of being able to type faster than 150 words per minute on the old manual typewriters. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi fraternity for over 65 years and a lifetime member of the Legal Secretary National Association. More than one fun-filled party was held for these associations were hosted by her at the home she made with Rick and Lori. During World War II Dad and Mom and their young family moved to Richmond CA in support of the war effort. Mom was in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and also was a guard at a war plant. Another significant occasion was the birth of their third child, Richard (Rick) in Richmond. They moved back to Iowa where she worked for the Decorah Newspaper. It was always fun watching her read the old type face that was upside down and backwards. The family moved to Cedar Rapids IA where Mom was a legal secretary for many years. Dad and Mom moved to Tucson and she retired after years of working for a federal judge. They moved to Twin Falls in the fall of1998. Dad and Mom lived with Rick and Lori and enjoyed many days with them and their kids that made their way to their home. They loved going on "adventures", as they called them, exploring many of the scenes and places in the Twin Falls-area. Mom loved to read and was a fan of mystery novels. She especially enjoyed Mary Higgins Clark. Both she and Dad were volunteers at the food banks in Tucson and Twin Falls and were always giving of their time for and to others. Mom was a member of the Red Hat Society and enjoyed many get togethers with the red and purple clad ladies.
She loved trying different things such as helicopter and motorcycle rides. She never did get to ride white water rapids, but loved boat rides on the Snake River. She had a great Teddy Bear collection that she donated to the Twin Falls Police Department. Mom was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church. She had a wonderful sense of humor that she shared with one and all. Her homes were always welcome to everyone.
Rick always had a hard time getting her off the "riding lawnmower". She loved it. She is survived by her children: Albert and Lucy (Hankins) Coonrod of Peoria AZ; Craig and Jeanine (Dionne) Coonrod of North Kingstown RI; Richard and Lori (Liljenquist) Coonrod of Twin Falls ID; Nikki (Coonrod) and Jon Thompson of Benson AZ; and Mark and Amy Coonrod of Cedar Rapids, IA; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. A heart-felt thanks to Rick and Lori for the kindness and love spent over the last decade in a loving family home. With all our love and many cherished memories, we love and honor you, Mother.
