Orval Dean Cary, 82, of Payette, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012 at his home in Payette. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday Dec. 22, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church, 502 N 11th St., Payette. Pastor Bill Hays will officiate. Orval was born at home Nov. 24, 1930 in Perkins County south of Grant, NE, the second of five children to Wilbur and Mattie Cary. In 1936 the dust bowl and depression forced them to move west to Emmett, ID where they spent one year and moved further west to Corvallis, Oregon. Orval went eight years to country schools and went to high school in Corvallis graduating in 1948. In 1950 he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served four years during the Korean War. Most of his time in the Air Force was spent at Connolly AFB in Waco, TX where he met and married LaVaughna Rue Wood May, 31, 1952. After leaving the Air Force he then attended the University of Oregon graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. After graduating he went to work for the Can Making Division of the Carnation Company. They lived in Mt. Vernon, WA where their daughter Karen was born in 1958. After one year Orval was transferred to the Carnation headquarters in Los Angeles, CA. and after four years he was transferred to the Can Division in Nampa, ID. In 1966, Orval left Carnation Company and went to work as a Sales Manager for Idaho Canning Co. (later American Fine Foods) in Payette, becoming Vice President in 1971. He left the cannery in 1986 and worked for Idaho Fruit Sales in Caldwell until 1988 when he began working for Oregon Trail Mushroom in Vale, OR. Orval retired from the mushroom farm in 1996 and started working part time for the Oregon Agricultural Statistics Service collecting crop and livestock information from farmers and ranchers in Malheur and Baker County. He did this work and was president of the Little Country Village where they resided until Nov. 30, 2012 when cancer no longer permitted him to continue. Orval and LaVaughna thoroughly enjoyed living in Payette where their second child, Brian was born in 1967. They enjoyed being in a rural community with many friends and activities. During his years in Payette, Orval served as chairman of the first bond election for the swimming pool, co-chairman for the bond election to build the dome in Payette, was President of the Chamber of Commerce was active in Kiwanis Club and served on several school committees. He was a member of the Payette First United Methodist Church where he served several years as Chairman of the Finance Committee and especially enjoyed singing in the choir and being part of the Song Fellows. In the late 1970's, Orval and LaVaughna purchased a cabin in McCall where many special memories were made entertaining family and friends. He was instrumental in starting the Boat Dock Association and organizing the building of a 20 slip boat dock.
Orval was a caring, loving husband and father and kept in close contact with his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Orval was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Frank. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, LaVaughna; sisters, Nelma Ziegler (Ron) of Escondido, CA and Laverna Couey of Federal Way, WA; a brother, Lavern Cary of Sublimity, OR; a daughter, Karen Troutfetter (Jim) of Mountain Home; a son, Brian Cary (Marcela) of Nampa; granddaughters, Jamie Troutfetter Rood (Jon), Mindy Troutfetter, Carly Troutfetter, and Paloma Cary; grandsons, Tomas Cary and Alejandro Cary.
