Paul Leo Schaffer

Paul Leo Schaffer was born June 26, 1927 in Beloit, Kansas to Alfred and Villa May (Ninemiers) Schaffer. He passed away on April 7th, 2020 in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
Paul grew up In Beloit along with 5 brothers and 3 sisters. He married Dorothy "Jean" (Hunter) Schaffer in 1957.
Paul graduated from St. John's Catholic High School in 1945 and enlisted in the US Navy shortly after graduation joining 4 of his brothers who were already serving in the military. Paul made the Navy his career until his retirement as a Master Chief in 1967. During that career, his duty stations included a hospital ship at the beginning of his career. Subsequent orders included recruiting duty, the USS Columbus, plank owner on the USS Long Beach (the world's first nuclear powered combatant surface craft, instructor duty at the Navy's nuclear power school in Idaho and the USS Guadalupe.
Within days of retiring from the Navy, he began his second career as a reactor operator at Argonne National Laboratories in Idaho. He retired from Argonne in 1987
After retiring from Argonne, he kept busy with his garden growing many of his vegetables from seeds he had harvested from previous years, building his own tools and jigs for his word working shop, and fixing anything that needed to be fixed. Giving himself a chance to see more of the country, he drove rental cars for Budget and Avis to locations all over the West.
Paul is survived by his wife Jean Schaffer of Idaho Falls, three children ( Bradley E. Schaffer, Idaho Falls; Paula K. Fisher, El Cajon, California; Kevin R. Schaffer, Brawley, California), two step daughters (Sandra L. Davidson, Indianapolis, Indiana; Linda A. Davidson, Lakeside, California)and one sister, Delores Thomas, Manhattan, Kansas and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to St. John's Catholic Church in Beloit, Kansas, the Fleet Reserve Association or the VFW in Beloit, KS.
