Preston "Kent" Shaw (Poppa), 79, of Jerome, passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2010 at St Luke's Magic Valley Medical Center.
He was born August 26, 1930 in Hailey, Id., son of Frank Preston & Sylvia Shaw. Kent grew up in Stanley, Id. During the summer months of his younger years, he helped his Aunt Marjorie on her ranch at Fisher Creek.
Kent moved to Ketchum with his family during the war years where his parents had a Taxi service. In 1945 they moved to Boise where Kent attended High School. In 1946, they moved back to Stanley where he worked at the service station and garage that his father had built.
On Sept. 1, 1950 Kent married Norma Monk in Hailey, Id. This year, 2010, would have been their 60th wedding anniversary. From this union three children were born, Merla, Gail and Mark.
In the mid 50's, Kent and his family moved to the Four Corners area where Kent worked for a power company installing power lines to the oil wells.
Also, during the 50's, Kent and family lived in Las Vegas, Nevada. where he worked for the City of North Las Vegas. He continued working and living in Las Vegas during the winter months and returning to Stanley to work during the summer months for the next few years.
In the early 60's, Kent and family moved to Hailey where he went into a business with his brother in-law as outfitters and guides. This business took Kent back into all the high mountain lakes of the Sawtooth National Forest and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. This put him in the element he loved, in the mountains with his horses, always wanting to see what was over the next ridge.
During this time, he worked for Sun Valley Company in the winter months driving ski bus. While at this job, he met and enjoyed visiting with everyone from co-workers to celebrities. Many of these acquaintances became lifelong friends.
In the mid 60's, Kent had an opportunity to go to work for the City of Ketchum. He retired from that job in 1993 after twenty five years.
In 1996, Kent and Norma moved to Jerome, where he enjoyed spending much of his time in his shop fabricating and repairing trucks and equipment.
They traveled a lot and spent many winter months in Yuma, Az., where he loved the warmth of the sun and the absence of snow and wind.
He is survived by his wife, Norma of Jerome and children, Merla (Maurice) Pyne of Hailey, Gail (Marty) Peterson of Shoshone and Mark (Lori) Shaw of Coeur d'Alene and brothers David (Barbara) Shaw of Tacoma, Wa, Alan (Linda) Shaw of Battlegound, WA and sister Zella (Howard) Cutler of Challis, Id. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
