Richard Herbert Dodge

November 24, 1931 — December 12, 2019

Richard Herbert Dodge was born on November 24, 1931 to Herbert Nelson and Ethel Marie Dodge in Canton, Illinois. He had one brother Charles Phillip, now deceased, two sisters Charolette Ann, now deceased, and Mary Alice Buncher in Plano TX. He grew up in Galesburg, Illinois and graduated from Galesburg Senior Highschool in 1949. He joined the US Navy in December of 1949, volunteering for Navy Submarine service in 1951. He married Dorothy Bettisworth in 1951 and had two sons, David and Steven. They were divorced in 1961. In 1955 he entered the Navy Nuclear Power Training Facility (NNPTF) in Idaho Falls for training. In 1956 he was transferred to the first nuclear powered submarine, USS Nautilus. In 1962 he returned to the NNPTF in Idaho Falls for a tour of duty as an instructor. During this time, he met his future wife, Rayola Mai and they were married September 6, 1963. They have one son, Michael Roy who lives in Denver, Colorado. He served on one diesel and several nuclear submarines during his Navy career. On July 1, 1970 he retired from the US Navy in Washington D.C. where he was stationed at the time after 21 years of service. He loved his service to the country, always proudly proclaiming such.

We returned to Idaho Falls and he went to work for the Argonne National Laboratory at the INL site. After 23 years he retired from Argonne in January 1994. They enjoyed spending the summers in Island Park where they had built a cabin themselves with help from friends. They sold the property in 2012 as it became difficult to maintain.

They were married for 56 years having spent their 50th anniversary on a trip to Hawaii with their son Michael and daughter-in-law Debra.

He is survived by his wife Rayola, their son Michael and wife Debra, also sons David Steven.

He was a wonderful husband and Father. He truly loved his family and friends.
