Dick was born on November 21, 1944, in Norfolk, Nebraska, to Ervin D. and Helen Klein Rahl. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Foster, Nebraska. He graduated from Pierce, Nebraska, high school in 1963. The day following his graduation, he began working for the Nebraska Department of Highways and attending the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, from which he graduated in January 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. He was a member of Chi Epsilon honorary. He then began his 32-year career with Phillips Petroleum at the NRTS which is now the INL retiring in February 2000. He received his Master of Science degree from the University of Idaho and was a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Idaho. He married Julianne Reed at Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice, Nebraska, on June 8, 1968. They have lived in Idaho Falls their entire married lives. He had been a member of Hope Lutheran Church since 1968 where he was the Financial Secretary for several years and had been an active member until his final illness prevented his attendance. Dick was a loyal Nebraska Husker fan and an active outdoorsman, enjoying skiing, biking, hunting, fishing, hiking and backpacking. He was an avid reader and card player - especially bridge and sheepshead. Dick was truly a miracle as he was a three-time cancer survivor but had been cancer free since 1986. He moved to Fairwinds Retirement Community in 2011 and to Parkwood Meadows in 2013. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at both facilities - especially some very special staff members who took extra care - for their kindness to Dick and his family. We especially thank Mark Osadchey, physical therapist, who worked tirelessly with Dick for more than four years and became a good friend. Dick is survived by his wife of 47 years, Julie, his son, Jon (Amy) Rahl, his daughter, Gretchen (Michael) Hroma, and four grandchildren (Megan, Hannah, Lauren and Alex). He is also survived by his mother Helen Rahl, his sister Janelle (Leroy) Fischer, his brother Tom (Janet) Rahl, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his grandparents, his father Ervin Rahl, and his sister and her husband Marlene and Wilbur Warneke, and his nephew Clinton Fischer. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 22, 2015, at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home, 825 E. 17th Street in Idaho Falls. Burial will follow at New Sweden Cemetery. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 21, and from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Monday at Buck-Miller-Hann Funeral Home.
