Roy Franklin "Mike" Hemsworth passed away peacefully at home on Saturday January 11, 2020. Hew was born February 19, 1934 in Robbinsdale, Minnesota to Elmer and Harriet (Nichols) Hemsworth. He was the 8th of 14 children. Mike grew up in Blackfoot, Minnesota and graduated high school in 1951.
He joined the Navy that same year and was stationed in San Diego as a Machinist Mate until 1955. After the military he worked as a machinist until he bought his own shop in El Monte, California. He later met Judy (Johnson) Schenet, who had two daughters, Teresa and Tambra Schenet. The family moved to Twickenham, Oregon in 1969 and then to Fruitland, Idaho where they would spend the rest of their lives. Mike got a job with Amalgamated Sugar company where he worked until retirement. He made many life-long friends there.
Mike was an avid bowler and often traveled to tournaments. However, his true passion was raising and racing thoroughbred horses. He was introduced to this sport through his life-long friends Bob and Sue Riggs of Fruitland. The family spent many hours traveling to Les Bois Park in Boise and the Emmett track in the springtime. He was also very instrumental in returning Horse Racing back to the Ontario, Oregon track for a couple of years. He was a member of the Idaho Thoroughbred Breeders Association.
Some of the family's fondest memories are of Mike sitting in the living room strumming his 6-string guitar singing old western song. Mike was very opinionated and never cared if it was popular or politically correct. You always knew where he stood on any given subject. The Idaho Lottery Commission will surely miss his business. He went to the store every day for his "scratchers". Once when returning from work he was t-boned by a sugar beet truck. No one was injured (except his truck). When the emergency vehicles arrived, they thought a lottery vehicle had been involved because of all the losing scratch tickets blowing down the road and around the accident. We will miss your wit and wonderful stories. We love you.
He is survived by a sister, Helen Sienerth, North Carolina; 2 sons, Randy Hemsworth of Nevada and Joey Hemsworth of Texas; 3 daughters, Rebecca Hemsworth of Arizona, Teresa Alexander of Idaho, and Tambra Cetorelli of Idaho. Favorite nephew, who thought of him as a second dad, Dale Johnson (Georgia) of Oregon. Also, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family members.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 12 siblings, his wife, Judy Hemsworth and his special little dog, Sissy.
A celebration of life for Mike will occur later this spring. Instead of memorial contributions, the family is asking you to buy a scratch off lottery ticket in Mike's memory.
The family wishes to thank Treasure Valley Hospice and the VA hospital.
A Celebration of Life will occur later in the spring.
