Ruth I Griffin

May 10, 1933 — June 3, 2013

Ruth was born at home just north of Payette, Idaho on May 10, 1933 to Selmer and Gertrude (Strandness) Peterson. Her parents farmed the Hyline area of the Oregon Slope and she attended Pioneer school. Ruth married her sweetheart, Alvin Mitchell Griffin on December 29, 1950 during her senior year at Ontario High School. Alvin had joined the army and while he was attending basic training, Ruth stayed with her parents until she graduated from high school, then she joined Alvin in San Francisco where he served active duty for two years. Alvin was discharged from the Army in 1953 and he turned down an offer a position as a rookie cop in San Francisco because of his love of wide open spaces.

Alivin and Ruth bought a farm from Vera Staples on the Hyline area of the Oregon Slope. They lived in a 16'X24' shack with no plumbing until they purchased the Leonard Grimes place across the street in 1959. They raised hay, grain alfalfa seed and milked dairy cows. In 1996 Alvin and Ruth retired from farming and bought 8 acres on Boatlanding Road.

Ruth and Alvin were very active Hyline Community members. They were involved with weekly pinochle parties, many a fish fry, Hyline groundhog feeds, Fourth of July picnics, just to name a few. Ruth was a Sunday school teacher for a number of years and a member of the Hyline Auxiliary, Solana Club, Treasure Valley Crankers and helped support many youth activities when her sons were growing up.

Ruth will be remembered for her big smile and her ever cheerful nature. She truly never knew a stranger and would strike up a conversation everywhere she would go and often knew all about you by the end of the conversation. She was a wonderful grandma that taught all her grandchildren to play Kings Corners and other card games. She always had a well-stocked pantry full of cookies and chocolate, (lots of chocolate!) The grandkids would visit and ride their bikes, motorbikes and snowmobiles throughout the years and they were always met with goodies and hot cocoa.

Ruth is survived by her husband Alvin and their two sons and daughters-in-law, Leon & Laura Griffin and Mark & Tammi Griffin, her brother and sister-in-law Bob & Imogene Peterson. She has seven grandchildren, Kevin (Adele) Griffin, Jaimie (Sam) Widmer, Jill (Brandon) Thomas, Scott Griffin, Andrew Griffin, Aaron Griffin and Amanda Griffin, plus 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth's family is grateful for the support given by the Heart and Home Hospice for providing quality and dignity during her final months. Special thanks to the staff of Emeritus at Meadowbrook for ensuring Ruth's needs were met.

In lieu of flowers, donations to First Baptist Church Children's Ministry or Heart and Home Hospice would be appreciated, c/o Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, Idaho 83661. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday June 7th at the First Baptist Church in Ontario, Oregon.
