Ruth Marie Jones Jackson, 92, formerly of Pico Rivera, Calif., passed away peacefully on January 10, 2014 at Heritage Assisted Living in Twin Falls. Due to their failing health, Ruth and her husband, Paul, moved to Twin Falls in 2009 to live with their daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Steve McKasson.
Ruth was born Oct. 10, 1921 in Bentleyville, Pennsylvania to Mark and Sarah Jones. She was the youngest of five children and was a twin to her sister, Marian Grace, who passed away on Jan. 5, 2014 in Bentonville, Arkansas. Ruth and Marian were always referred to as "the twins" and they were very close all their lives. They were very rambunctious as children and would tell the story of their mother tethering them to the clothesline in the backyard to keep them out of trouble. They were always dressed alike throughout their school years. They had fun trading identities at school to confuse their friends and their teachers.
Ruth enjoyed sports all her life. She played "pick-up" football and baseball games with her siblings and the neighborhood kids. She and Marian were avid Pittsburg Pirates baseball fans.
Ruth attended Point Marion High School in Pennsylvania. She was a class officer and participated in debate, orchestra and marching band, graduating with honors in 1939. She and Marian then attended Morgantown Business College and passed the secretarial course. She was employed as a secretary in the Point Marion schools until her marriage on Feb. 25, 1946, to Paul R. Jackson. They moved to California where Paul became an officer in the Los Angeles Police Department in 1947. They established a home in Pico Rivera, Calif. in 1950. She later became an avid Los Angeles Dodgers fan and continued to follow the Pirates and other sports teams.
While raising their family, Ruth worked from home as a newspaper columnist for the Pico Rivera Times-Post and the Sante Fe Springs Independent. She also reported on elections and society events. She volunteered in the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, March of Dimes, Community Chest, and the American Field Service Foreign student exchange program. She continued her love of sports by volunteering as the official scorekeeper at her sons' baseball games. She was the treasurer for the committee to build a junior college in the area and also worked tirelessly for the incorporation of the two neighboring towns, Pico and Rivera. Both ballot issues were passed. Due to her efforts, she was named "The Mother of Pico Rivera" by the city.
In 1961, she began working as a secretary in the Montebello Unified School District. She retired from there in 1983. For a few years in the late 1960's, she left the school district for a position with North American Rockwell in Downey, California, the company which was manufacturing the Apollo space capsules. She met many astronauts and enjoyed being a part of that exciting time in our nation's space exploration efforts. When the Apollo program began to slow down, she returned to the school district. After retirement, she and Paul enjoyed travelling to visit their extended family around the country.
In 1964, Paul and Ruth and their children joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ruth served in various positions in the Relief Society and Sunday School.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Paul, and their children Carol McKasson (Steve), Craig R. Jackson (Marcy) of Vancouver, WA and Dennis R. Jackson of Corona, CA; 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
