She grew up and attended schools in Denver, CO. She married Edward Arndt on June 20, 1954 in Ontario, OR. To this union one daughter was born, Cindy. Ed and Sylvia farmed on the Oregon Slope area for several years. In 1965, they moved to Payette. Soon after moving, Sylvia started working at the Payette Nursing Home. This is where Sylvia found her love of taking care of people, especially the elderly. After working there for several years, she obtained her CNA license. Sylvia then went to work for Holy Rosary Hospital for over 30 years. After leaving the hospital, she enjoyed working at Care At Home. She always liked to take care of people. Over the years, Ed and Sylvia were foster parents to several children. Later, they were hosts to foreign exchange students. Laura and Kirsten were two very special exchange students to Ed and Sylvia. Contact was kept with these students.
Sylvia enjoyed sewing, doing and making a variety of crafts, bowling and her flower gardens. She also enjoyed helping with the annual bazaar at Pilgrim Lutheran. She also helped with many weddings and other parties that the church hosted. After Ed's death in 2002, Sylvia met and later married John Kurts in 2006. Sylvia enjoyed going to church with John. Sylvia's family would like to thank John for all his tender care of Sylvia these past 2 ½ years of her life while at Payette Care and Rehab. We also want to thank Heart ‘n Home Hospice for all of their care of Sylvia. Sylvia is survived by her husband John Kurts; daughter Cindy Crume and husband Norm of Ontario; granddaughters Carrie Costello (Chad) of Ontario and Cassie Love (Mike) of Fruitland; two great grandsons Tyler Braden and Ashton Costello of Ontario; three sisters Mary Winkler of Stillwater, OK, Jeannie Case of Omaha, NE and Donna Nelson of Rapid City, SD; step-daughters DaLonna McGill of Payette and Iva Henderson of Riggins, ID; and step-son Robert Kurts of Lewiston, ID. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and several step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Edward Arndt. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Sylvia to Pilgrim Lutheran Church, c/o Shaffer-Jensen Memory Chapel, P.O. Box 730, Payette, ID 83661.
