Verla J. Laughlin
May 25, 1927 - April 27, 2015
Twin Falls
Verla J. Laughlin passed away Monday, April 27, 2015 at St. Luke's Magic Valley Medical Center with her family by her side.
Verla was born in Galesburg, Kansas on May 25, 1927 to Keifer and Juanita Duecy Makinson. She was one of six children. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Idaho, where she attended school in the Hazelton area and graduated from Hazelton High School. Verla married Raymond Laughlin on September 30, 1946 in Elko, Nevada. They raised their 3 children in Twin Falls and were together until his death on June 18, 1985.
Verla was employed by St. Luke's Medical Center from 1963 until her retirement in 2013, where she was very proud to complete 50 years of service. She loved her job and all of her co-workers at the lab, who she considered to be a part of her family. She was a big influence on many, and always had advice to share. Her strong opinions and words of wisdom are going to be missed.
Verla was also one of the best cooks around. You knew that you were special if you received a favorite dish, whether to be Chicken Enchiladas, her Macaroni and Cheese, Zucchini Cake, Ginger Bars, or her famous canned jellies and jams. Her Christmas candy was always a treasured gift and would have a personal touch from her with a sticker, stamp or signature. She always thought of others and loved sending care packages to her grandchildren and great grandchildren whether they be here or far away. You never left her house empty handed. Verla also enjoyed traveling to California and Arizona with her daughter and son in law to see her grandchildren. She loved working in the garden and would always send home tomatoes, apples, zucchini, or peppers to anyone who wanted some. Everything from the garden that didn't get eaten, would be canned, frozen or dried. She took great pride in the flowers around her house as they were always blooming and beautiful.
Verla is survived by her children, Gary (Gail) Laughlin, Stephen Laughlin, Melanie (Tom) McCaughey; her grandchildren, Lisa (Todd) Harvey, Chad Laughlin, Amy (Travis) Blamires, Dan McCaughey (Janae) and Casey McCaughey. Great grandchildren, Aaron (Jenna) Harvey, Kylie Harvey, Ellie Blamires, Abigail Harvey, Ayden Blamires, and Brynlee McCaughey. Great-Great Grandchildren, Ava and Elaina Harvey. Her sister, Barbara Evans and a brother, Ronald Makinson along with many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Roy, her beloved cat.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert Makinson; her sisters, Donna Joann Willard, Doris Crumrine Cameron and Shirley Cooper; her husband and her grandson, Andrew McCaughey.
A viewing for family and friends will take place on Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at White Mortuary, 136 4th Ave. East, Twin Falls. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, May 8, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Canyon Crest Event Center, Twin Falls.
