Jerry was born in Edgemont, South Dakota on September 14th, 1933 to Francis Alberta Webb and Waldron Cheney Townsend and passed away on October 23, 2019.
He is survived by daughter Christina Townsend of Idaho Falls, son Waldron Clint (Cathy) Townsend of Harrison, Idaho, daughter Bonnie Fowler of Salt Lake City, daughter Jamie (James) Hartley of Colbert, Washington. Granddaughters Jody Townsend of El Paso, Texas, Brianna McKenna of Salt Lake City, Juree (Lynn) Burton of Salt Lake City, Melissa (Zack) Draper of Salt Lake City, Madison Hartley and Avery Hartley of Colbert, Washington. Great-Grandkids, Dylan Draper and Hanna Burton. His sister Carol (Jerry) Wang of Leesburg Florida.
He is preceded in death by his wife Shirley, brother Bill and daughter Sharon and his parents.
He grew up near Osage, Wyoming in Weston County where his father was an oil producer. He graduated from high school at Upton, Wyoming in 1951.
He served in the U.S. Army during the end of the Korean conflict. While in the service and stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington he met Shirley and they were married soon after his discharge in 1955 on April 5th 1956.
He graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1959 at the University of Wyoming. He continued working as a graduate assistantship while working on his master and teaching. He worked for Hercules Powder Company in Salt Lake City from 1960-1962. He then returned to the University in1962 and completed his master in Mechanical Engineering in 1963. He then entered the nuclear industry and worked for the contactors for eight years and teaching Mechanical Engineering and related courses at the Columbia Basin College while working at the Hanford nuclear facility near Richland, Washington. Upon leaving Hanford he took the family to Pittsburgh, PA for an opportunity with Westinghouse Electric Nuclear Products for three years. In 1972 the family again moved, this time to Idaho Falls, Idaho and worked at the INEL until his retirement in 1995.
He grew up in a musical environment compliments of his mother. Frances was a professional pianist and Jerry played the Tenor sax as well as the piano. In fact, Jerry could listen to a song on the radio and sit down at the piano and play the song. Music continued while in the Army where he helped set up the band for the battalion. Jerry was very involved in scouting and was a scoutmaster for 22 years. He enjoyed photography, music, hunting, fishing, camping, gold and investing.
Memorial Services will be held at First Evangelical Lutheran Church on November 9th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to either the First Evangelical Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
